NO ENDINGS! But you EXPECTED one! |
Believe
it or not, there are quite a few Commodore 64 games out there that DO NOT possess a game ending even though you
expected them to have one! How many times have you read the game instructions which tell you that you have to
'reach the end' and eventually find that there is no 'end'?
To save you a lot of time and hassle, the C64endings Team have put together the following
list of Commodore 64 games that have no ending (even
though you expected one!)
|
- Use the A to Z menu below to get to the game
you require - |
- 1985 by MASTERTRONIC.
Info provided in by Gaz Spence (on the LEMON 64 forum)
on 27/04/07: the day after (after Level 8, the game
makes you replay level 7 after which you're in an
infernal loop - the instructions state there are 12
levels, so maybe it's a bug (a coder could perhaps
take a look) - 720 DEGREES by

have to chase the replicant through the street. The
last replicant is the most difficult because he/she
keeps running along the back wall, but everything
else is the same. I'm sure there is no ending screen

short line in the same game screen for a couple of

the 4 element levels ( fire, earth, air & water )
you are sent a level called 'limbo'. I completed
this and was then sent back to the fire level! Read
the Zzap review and it mentions that the limbo level
is the last one - so looks like this has no ending.

-
CRAZY CARS by TITUS. Sent in by
Brendan Phoenix on 27/05/09: Completed all 3 courses
with all cars available - no ending
- CRAZY CAVEMAN by
MERLIN. Been playing this for a while and no end is
in sight - the enemy attacks just loop, rolling
boulders, dino's, dodo's and terrordactyls - and
repeat. From 1983, looks like one of those early
titles which is never ending.
-

Collins on 26/06/09: Seems as though the C64 doesn't
have a tournament mode like the Spectrum version. I
beat the computer opponent and nothing happened.

qualification settings.
-
DANDY by ELECTRONIC DREAMS. Finally put to
bed by the C64endings Team on 15/01/10: Neil: I
completed this approx 20 times and played every
version available. I'm pretty sure there's no way of
entering the answers to the riddles and I'm also
sure there's nothing else we can do with it.
- DANGER FREAK by
RAINBOW ARTS.
Info provided in by Brendan Phoenix 06/07/08: Just
played this through to the end - after completing
the final level you are met by the same mid game
screen as all the other levels which proclaim 'well
you seem to be a real stuntman'. The game then
goes to the highscore table.
- DAVY: KING OF THE WILD FRONTIER
by CASCADE. Info provided in by Neil Collins
30/01/09: Saved the girl, only to find you get
surrounded and thrown back to the start on a higher

happens at all - you just go back to the start of
level one.
-
DEADRINGER by ARIOLASOFT. Sent in by Neil
Collins on 28/08/09: Eight almost identical levels
and you stay on the eighth one forever. -
DEATH RACE 64 by ATLANTIS. Sent in by
Brendan Phoenix on 10/01/09: Object is to pass 70
cars in 80 seconds which I managed to do without
cheats - all I got was an extended play with more
cars on the road. Unable to complete this
level, but good possibility it just continues to
loop
- DEATHWISH III by GREMLIN
GRAPHICS.
Info provided in by Brendan Phoenix 21/05/08:
Been playing this for a while
and can see no ending in site - had a look on the
Lemon64 forum and the opinion is the same on there
that this game does not have an ending.
- DECEPTOR by AVANTAGE.
Info provided in by Inge Pedersen 04/06/08: On the end of Level 4, there is a boss
(the same dude that gives you the mission in the
first place). After you have finished him, the game
loads a Level 5, which just seems to loop.
-
DIG DUG by ATARISOFT. Sent in by Ivan Smolenski on
26/02/06: Loops after 99 levels.
-
DINKY DOO by SOFTWARE PROJECTS. Sent in by
Neil Collins on 08/07/10: There are 15 levels to
beat which loop back to level one once beaten.
- DJ PUFF by CODEMASTERS.
Info provided in by Brendan Phoenix 06/07/08: Found
a trained version with a level skip - 5 levels and
it went straight back to level 1. As a double
measure I played and completed the final level - end
of level boss appears, defeat him and the it just
goes back to level 1. Disappointing from Codemasters
considering the CJ games had ok little endings.
-
DORIATH by VIRGIN. Sent in by Inge Pedersen on
08/08/08: Apparently there is no real ending on this
game. You defeat the ice dragon and cannot leave the
final room.
-
DRAGON HAWK by CREATIVE SOFT. Sent in by Neil
Collins on 24/06/09: This Joust clone has no ending
to it. Beat the dragon, and it's back to the start.
-
DRAGON'S DEN by COMMODORE. Sent in by
Neil Collins on 08/01/09: The game has a few silly

looping back to the start with the difficulty
increasing. I beat it about 20 times to see if
anything happened but it didn't.
-

by DIRECT DESIGNS. Sent in by Neil Collins on
06/11/08: Once you beat the creature at the end it
just returns to the title page.
- DROPZONE by US GOLD.
It may be an arcade game, but I feel that it still needs a game ending. Archer MacLean was kind
enough to confirm to me that the game does NOT possess a game ending.
-
DUCK SHOOT by MASTERTRONIC. Sent in by Neil
Collins on 02/09/09: Ninety levels of agony followed
by level 00 as the level counter loops back
to the start.

league standings from the menu, but there's no end
sequence or message.
-
ENCOUNTER by NOVAGEN. Sent in by NPI on
28/10/08: It goes on and on and it never ends

the high-score table.
- ESWAT by US GOLD.
Info provided in by Brendan Phoenix 06/07/08: I had
a crack that crashed first of all - straight after I
had the suit - I was stuck on a window ledge and
couldn't move. The next one I played all the way
through and all the end of level guardians are the
same as the arcade version - but afer the final
level - nothing!
- EUROPEAN SOCCER CHALLENGE by
PLAYERS. Sent in by Neil Collins
on 05/07/09: You only have the option of
playing a friend or against the CPU in a single
match. I beat the computer on the hardest skill
level only to see the game return back to the title
screen.
- EXODUS by FIREBIRD. Sent in
by Neil Collins on 06/08/09: Only three levels which
repeat over and over. You need to shoot 50 aliens to
reach the next level, where the game speeds up. I
clocked the three levels over ten times to check
that there is no ending. It keeps looping forever.
- F1 TORNADO by
ZEPPELIN. Don't bother playing this one as it just
goes round and round and round and...
- F40 PURSUIT by
TITUS. Sent in by Neil Collins on 22/08/08: Just
keeps looping the same tracks over and over.
- FANTASTIC SOCCER by

you beat them, it's game over and back to the title

on 14/08/08: After 16 levels it loops back to level
one. Groan...

poor opponents and nothing happened. I checked the
magazine reviews too and they confirm there is no
ending.
-
FIVE A SIDE FOOTY by SILVERBIRD. Sent in by
Neil Collins on 22/01/10: You can only play a single
match against the computer. No options or change of
difficulty level. When you win the game just returns
to the title screen.
- FLYING SHARKS by FIREBIRD.
Sent in by Neil Collins on 31/07/09: Completed a few
versions of this. There is no ending. Loops back to
level one. The docs on the Nostalgia cracked version
also confirms that there is no ending.

64 forum) on 03/03/06: Little dance as usual then
goes back to level 1 but much harder.
- FOX FIGHTS BACK by
IMAGEWORKS.
Info provided in by Kobayashi (on the LEMON
64 forum) on 03/03/06: There's no end. At the end of
each level it says "Good Hunting Level [level
number] Cleared" Got to level 10 and thought
it can't go any further, surely. When I finished
that level it said "Good Hunting Level A cleared".
-
FRAK! by STAT SOFT. Sent in by Neil Collins
on 17/07/08: Loops
back to level one after level six. Fraking
rubbish. -
FRUIT MACHINE SIMULATOR by CODEMASTERS. Sent
in by Neil Collins on 03/07/09: As expected, there's
no point to these games apart from registering a
high score.
-
FALL GUY, THE by ELITE. 22/12/09: After Level
9, the game level counter goes a little
strange and starts displaying unconventional
characters. It looks like the programmer
never envisaged anyone getting passed this
level!
- GARY LINEKAR'S SUPER SKILLS by
GREMLIN GRAPHICS. Sent in by Neil Collins
on 30/06/09: This was a nasty one. Most of the
cracks out there (including the trained one), fail
to load up part two of the game. Managed to find a
working, uncracked version. Battled through all the
events only to find that the last section keeps
repeating until you fail or run out of energy. All
you get at the end of this one is a final score.
- GARY LINEKAR'S SUPERSTAR SOCCER by
GREMLIN GRAPHICS. Sent in by Neil Collins
on 30/06/09: I used to love this game as a
kid. Scoring overhead kicks from your own penalty
area. Insane. Unfortunately there is no point to
this game apart from beating a friend or playing a
computer team.
- GAZZA II by EMPIRE. Sent in
by Neil Collins on 23/07/09: An improvement on the
original football game, but there's no tournament or
end screen to this. You simply play a match and then
return to the title screen.
- GATEWAY TO APSHAI
by EPYX. Info provided in by Cybergoth
(on the LEMON 64 forum) on 14/05/06: It
keeps repeating level 8 once you get there.
- G.I. JOE by EPYX.
Info provided in by Cybergoth (on the LEMON
64 forum) on 14/05/06: after a while
imprisoned badies just escape from prison,
so it's not possible to beat them all.
Update from K-J-N on 14/05/06
(on the LEMON 64 forum): There is a fun reason
for this. From this interview with Jeff
Johannigman, programmer of the C64 version, at
the Epyx Shrine:
Why is the game never
ending?
"As for why the game has no end... Now
THAT is an interesting point. When I first
came to Epyx and they put me on the GI Joe
project, they said "This is not a game. It's
an ACTIVITY TOY." "Activity Toys" were Epyx
president Michael Katz's idea (Katz came
from the toy industry), to make products
that were more open-ended, less goal
oriented. I asked the other designers, and
they all came to the same basic conclusion -
"design a game, just don't have an ending."
-
GLADIATORS by ALTERNATIVE. Sent in by Neil
Collins on 14/08/08: After level 8.1 is complete, it
loops back to 1.1... Very poor indeed.
-
GLORY QUEST by LOADSTAR. Sent in by Neil
Collins on 25/07/10: The game crashes on level 69.
The amount of enemies on screen causes the code to
overload and crash. The instructions also state that
the only point of the game is to get a high score.
So there's definitely no end to this one.

- PARK PATROL by
Activision. Info provided in by Henrik on 02/11/07:
Perhaps there is one, but I never found one in "Park
Patrol". After 3 1/2 hours of playing, I was at
level 99 (which never increased), with 99 lives and
999,999 points. (Or was that 99,999? Anyways.) So I
tried dying, and made it down to about 40 lives left
when my old black-and-white teevee gave out on me.
*sob* It had never been on for that long in one
sitting before. Still a great game to play. Possibly
even better for not having any ending, just getting
more and more enemies and cans to pick up and ..
stuff. And music I can still remember. *brr* Sticky,
clingy, bouncy music. Help!
- PARADROID by HEWSON. Sent in by Edvard Kramer: "I finally killed
the very last remaining rogue droid on the spaceship. And immediately had to start with
the old .001 influence device from the very beginning of the game. No trumpets of
victory. Not even a cold handshake from the fleet commander."
Update from Craig Grannell on 15/01/06:
Your Paradroid listing isn't entirely accurate. What happens when you complete a
ship is you get put on to the next one, which is harder. After clearing "all" of the
ships, you end up in a loop, constantly being put back on a ship called something
"puntastic" like "Itsnotardenuff".

- ROCKY HORROR SHOW by CRL. Sent in by
Inge Pederson: I got a deja vu and just had to check
the game once more. Except from the hires pic, there
is no actual ending. ie: a) When you get killed, the
game presents you with an up-scroller. b) When you
finish the game, you get the picture of the mansion
for a few secs, and then the game jumps to the same
up-scroller as a).
-

-
SUPER CUP FOOTBALL by RACK-IT/HEWSON. Sent in
by Neil Collins on 22/01/10: Beat the computer on
the highest skill level only to return back to the
title page. Not as much as a 'Well done' or a

SUPER DRAGON SLAYER by CODEMASTERS. Sent in by Neil Collins
on 24/07/08: Tried a few versions of this. Seems
when you blow the dragon to bits at the end, it

TITAN by TITUS. Sent in by Neil Collins
on 20/01/10: Boring puzzle game with 80 levels. Once
completed, all you get is a game over message for
your troubles.
- TOP GUN by OCEAN. Sent in by Neil Collins
on 07/07/09: Just beat the computer on level
9. It then goes onto level ':', followed by level
';' etc.. It's safe to say that this one has no
ending. A simple game over would have been better
than going on forever. Poor programming.

back to Friday, Hour 1!! Round and round it goes :-(

there is no actual end screen, only the 'Game Over'
message.
-
TRAIN ROBBERS by FIREBIRD. Sent in by Neil

stages over and over. I robbed 99 trains only to
find it goes back to level 0.
-
TRAP by ALLIGATA. Sent in by
Neil Collins on 15/05/09: There are 10 levels, and
after that the final orb section, the graphics
become garbled (I dont think a human is meant to get
this far). The game then goes to level 11, which is
the same as level 10. It probably rolls up until
level 99, but that would take about 30 years to
complete.
- TROOPER TRUCK by RABBIT SOFTWARE.
Here's another game that just gets faster and faster, resulting in harder and harder (oo-er,
missus!).

Over' message on completion of the final level.
-
TUNNEL VISION by RACK-IT/HEWSON. Sent in by

which player won the race as it does when the
computer player wins.

level 32, and so on forever.
-
WINGS OF FURY by BRODERBUND. Sent in by Neil
Collins on 25/03/10: There are 3 levels to beat on
the hardest ranking which is captain. Unfortunately
when you beat the last one you are sent to the high
score table and restart the game at the ranking
Ensign.

one after level fifty.
- YIE-AR KUNG-FU by IMAGINE. I remember playing this one for HOURS and watching it
go round and round until I gave up on seeing an actual ending.
- YIE-AR KUNG-FU II by
IMAGINE. Sent in by Kungfufurby on 09/05/0: I'm
afraid this game is most likely never ending. 8
stages and you go back to the first stage. Stage
number will still go up, though.
-
Z by RINO. Sent in by Gaz Spence on 28/10/08:
No ending with this, sadly. Seems there are four
levels (although the colours change through two
cycles - i.e. exact landscape repeats after eight
levels) which loop forever.
- ZALAGAN by FIREBIRD. Sent
in by Neil Collins on 05/02/10: Keeps looping the
same levels over and over. The level flags at the
side build up until they go off the top of the
screen and the game eventually crashes after
completing 225 levels.
- ZENOS - TOP TEN by
ALTERNATIVE. Sent in by Gaz Spence on 06/11/08: Just
loops after level 4.
- ZIP by THE POWER HOUSE.
Sent in by Gaz Spence on 06/11/08: After level 9, it
goes to level 0 and there it appears to remain for

level 4.
- ZULU by
FIREBIRD. Info provided in by Brendan (Fiery)
Phoenix on 05/05/06: No ending for Firebird's Zulu.
Bit disappointed on this as no trainer available I
played it through to completion. I was hoping like
Firebird's Go-Go The Ghost from the same time - it
too would have a cool little ending, but no - you
collect the 100th golden mask and it sends you
straight back to the start. Boo.
- ZYNAPS by
HEWSON. Info provided in by Kobayashi (on the LEMON
64 forum) on 03/03/06: Goes on forever!
- ZYRONS ESCAPE by KELE LINE.
Sent in by Gaz Spence on 06/11/08: On collecting the
39th (and final) key next to the exit, the game
seemingly crashes then after a few seconds goes back
to the title screen. I thought maybe I was playing a
bad crack, but the highscore is recognised when
starting a new game so looks like it's supposed to
happen that way.
