> CHILLER by Mastertronic

Played through by Vinny Mainolfi

Back in 1984 Mastertronic games for the Commodore 64 consisted of one-screen, multi-level games created by The Darling Brother's using their game maker. But then something shifted. They decided to add a little more to their games and take them a little further than the one screen. Out of this concept came Chiller, a well received, multi-level, multi-screened platformer that was based on the Michael Jackson video/song Thriller. Considering this game was only £1.99, it wasn't a surprise that it did so well in the game charts.

Let's take a look at the ten levels of the game. Note that after the first five levels, they repeat again, backwards, with the addition of the girl character...

HOW WAS IT PLAYED?: I used a trained version of the game and skipped through the levels.

  • Vinny: A nice set of levels for a great platformer. Pity there's no ending :(
  • Andrew Fisher: There is a good game in there hidden under some dodgy visuals and poor sound. The Darlings certainly went on to bigger and better things.
  • Andy Vaisey: Ahh.... the 'famous' Mastertronic game, Chiller...

Was there any C64 owner in the UK (from that certain time-frame) that didn't own this?!?!?!!!1

As Merdude pointed out above, poor GFX and SFX masking a game that is actually semi-playable. In most respects, this game should have gone in the bin, but I found this game incredibly (and unexplainably) addictive, amongst the frustration.

But please don't make me look at that horrendous loading screen again...

FINAL SAY: It could have been a lot worst seeing that it's an early Mastertronic title.

RATING: 6 / 10
