> ALLEY CAT by Solar Software

Played through by Vinny Mainolfi

Somewhere else on the C64endings site I mention that Alley Cat is a rip-off of the arcade platform game Hunchback - which it is in a way; but it's also a rip-off of another Solar Software title, Robin to the Rescue! In fact, the coder has just recycled the exact code and just change the screen layouts and the sprites - a blatant rip-off of his own work! There's even a hidden screen within the Alley Cat code that is the ending screen to Robin to the Rescue!

HOW WAS IT PLAYED?: I built a crazy hack version of the game and skipped through the levels.

  • Vinny: It's fun to play, but time hasn't been too kind to this game.
  • Andrew Fisher: Maybe this was the coder's first attempt, or something that took a while to find a publisher?
Whatever the reason it is very limited and outdated for 1987, and seems even more quaint now. A basic colour moving routine hardly spices up the ending either.
  • Brendan Phoenix: Solar Software were based literally 2 mins from my Mum and Dad's in Bury. A Google street search shows it as a residential address/property.
  • Andy Vaisey: Haha, nice 'hidden screen' find in the code Vinny! Proof positive of recycled code. Talk about money for old rope!

And what piss poor rope in the first place; why on earth recycle shite to make more shite?

FINAL SAY: Hunchback, Robin to the Rescue, Alley Cat... they're all much the same idea.

RATING: 6 / 10
