I stumbled on this game because I realised that I didn't have that many game endings left to add starting with the letter 'X', and so I decided to look through the GameBase64 database to see what I could find...

Xain'D Shleena is a Public Domain platform game that looks like it may have been set for release back in 1986, but didn't quite make it. In the game you play the main character, Xain, who is a galactic bounty-hunter and must defeat evil forces who oppress three (five in the original game) different planets.

Each planet is played with right horizontal scrolling, shooting enemies and dodging natural hazards. Xain can crouch, and jump. On the final planer the player will need to kill a sub-boss to resume.

This appears to be an unfinished/incomplete version of the game because it's missing a few elements that appear in the arcade version - such as double jump, double crouch, vertical scrolling, more planets... But then again, it may be a complete version due to the limitations of the Commodore 64.

It's a nice enough game, but a little too quick and simple. Saying that, I'd be proud of myself if I'd coded it :-)

Time to kick some butt!

Time to take off...

...and fly away...

...from the planet...

...and head home...

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I played the game with the collision turned off, and also the game speeded up to 1000%. It took about 20 seconds to go through!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you've defeated the boss at the end of the third planet, we see our hero's ship flying off into space and away from the planet. The words 'MISSION OVER!' appear and the game is over.

  • Vinny: It a surprisingly nice ending, but far too short and missing a few vital elements such as music and an epilogue. I could have done with a bigger explosion on the final planet - a bit of a nod to Star Wars. 6/10 from me.
  • Andrew Fisher: To clarify... Xain'D Sleena is also known as Soldier of Light in the arcades. Softek/The Edge released an official conversion. This was a tribute by a programmer, trying to make a game closer to the original as his first full game. It has some good features and some problems. It's good to see it has an ending, which seems like it draws inspiration from the original coin-op.
  • Gaz Spence: As a home brew, it's not a bad attempt particularly if it's the coders first stab.

FINAL SAY: Satisfying... just!

G.E. RATING: 6 / 10
