The Wombles by Alternative software is another game linked to a popular kids TV show. I was never a fan of the Wombles, but everybody knows the words to the theme tune.

The game features a few of the Womble characters as they attempt to clean up Wimbledon Common. You play the part of Orinoco who must collect rubbish and dispose of it in the bins scattered around the map. You also need to locate and return special objects to Tobermory when he requests them. You have to avoid Wellington who steals your objects or hunt him down to retrieve them. Finally you will need to return a copy of the Times newspaper to Uncle Bulgaria to win the game.

The graphics are decent and colourful and the game plays quite well.

It's not very difficult once you get to grips with it and you can easily find your way around by looking at the map at the bottom of the screen. It's not a classic but a simple little game to pass half an hour of your time.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I played it a few times and managed to beat it quite easily.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you get hold of the newspaper you need to rush back to your home where Uncle Bulgaria is waiting. The final screen shows pictures of the three Wombles and a short message which reads 'WELL DONE WOMBLES, THE COMMON IS CLEAN FOR ANOTHER DAY! ORINOCO GETS HIS JUST DESSERTS ... AND PUDDINGS AND CAKES ...'.

  • Neil: A very short game with a simple ending. Worth playing once, but the ending isn't a memorable one. 2/10.
  • Vinny: # Undergound, overground, Wombling free... The Wombles of Wimbeldon Common are we... making good use of the things that we find... things that the everyday folk leave behind... # How many of you UK viewers remember those early, dark evenings back in the late seventies  when you'd be sitting in front of the TV at the end of the two hours of children's programmes, waiting for The Wombles before the News? I miss those times.

The ending is typical of many of the Alternative TV/cartoon-tie-in game endings... 2/10 from me too.
  • Andrew Fisher: Used to watch The Wombles, but never played the game when it arrived.

It's not rubbish, but the ending could have been better.
  • Gaz Spence: A simple kid orientated game with an equally simple ending that rounds off proceedings. Just about what you'd expect from one those Alternative licences.
  • Andy Vaisey: I never bothered with any of these TV tie-ins from the late 80's and early 90's so can't comment much about any of the games. Disappointing ending, but it is a fraction better than most. A very small fraction.

FINAL SAY: Typical ending for such a game.

G.E. RATING: 2 / 10
