Weird dreams is an arcade adventure by Rainbird. Many people remember seeing the Amiga version of it on the kids TV show 'Motormouth', where a modified version of the game was used as part of a phone-in competition where kids could win prizes.

The aim of the game is to control a young lad through bizarre dream scenarios, fighting all kinds of unusual creatures. You need to collect the three orbs and reach the end of the dream without getting terrified - causing our hero to have a heart attack. Each scenario is different and the puzzles are pretty straight-forward, although at times quite frustrating as you will need to time your actions perfectly to progress.

The graphics are very good, and the scenery is very well drawn. I think it's a great original game but many people find it too frustrating and difficult - hence the mixed reviews in the computer magazines at the time. It's a really bizarre game so check it out if you haven't already.

Get ready... this means it's going to be a SUPERB ending :-)

WTF?! The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using an infinite lives cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: At the end of the game you have to face some weird circular-shaped monster with a large mouth. Some circular objects hover around it and you have to smack them all with the fish that you are carrying. Very Monty Python-esque indeed. If you hit all the objects, they fly into the monster's mouth and the game is complete. A screen pops up reading 'Congratulations. Weird Dreams 100% completed'. The game then restarts.

  • Neil: I was up for a classic ending here my friends. I was left high and dry. Terrible ending. 2/10.
  • Vinny: Though I love the concept of the game and also some of the scenes and graphics, the controls are a little frustrating, which isn't helped by the infuriating multi-load :(

As for the ending... [Vinny shakes his head in disbelief] Seriously - so much potential to do something cool and zany, and they give in to such a dire ending. 2/10 from me too.
  • Andy Vaisey: Now this is a great example of a concept that, with proper thought and testing, could have been great. However, we're left with something a little lacklustre. And why does a 'congrats' text message require an extra load? Piss-take or something?!?
  • Andrew Fisher: Over-ambitious for the C64 to handle this, but a decent effort at replicating the unusual 16-bit original.

If you are going to the effort of loading an extra section, it should do more than that!
  • Brendan Phoenix: I was playing the Amiga version of this the other week and checked out the ending on YouTube - no great shakes, but involved the opening operating sequence but with your coming out of your dream and waking up. One of the surgeons then takes off their mask / evil face and brandishes a big knife!

I watched it and was actually slightly disappointed, but it is a masterpiece compared to this trash!

FINAL SAY: Am I dreaming? I must be!
