• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Vigilante is a typical arcade conversion of a side-scrolling beat-em-up by US Gold. It's the usual story - your girlfriend Madonna has been kidnapped by some evil skinhead gang. You have to beat the crap out of the endless hordes of villains through five levels to reach the end. The game is thought to be the successor to the legendary arcade game Kung-Fu Master. I was never a fan of Vigilante in the arcade, and the C64 version falls far short of the mark.

Our hero reaches the end.

The heroine is hanging up high...

...and finally ends up in our hero's arms.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite lives cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: At the end of level five you get to fight the big bad skinhead leader. After kicking the crap out of him our hero is shown rescuing his girlfriend who is tied up and hanging by a rope from a large advertising board. The final shot shows our hero carrying Madonna with a message written above him. The message reads 'WAY TO GO DUDE!!! YOU SAVED MADONNA. LAW AND ORDER FAILED BUT THE VIGILANTE PREVAILED'. The game then restarts.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: OK ending. A bit of animation, a little jingle and a cheesy rhyme. An apt way to wrap this one up.

  • Vinny: Not really my kind of game. As Neil mentions below, it the usual kind of ending for this type of game. No surprises here.

  • Matt Rogers: Grey sprites!? What!? Messy.

  • Andy Vaisey: Those graphics seem to made out of LEGO. They hurt my eyes.

Dude? DUDE? I object to an inferior game calling me dude. I can think of a few names for the developers, but they aren't as polite and I won't repeat them here...

  • Kungfufurby: Not half bad... at least this isn't as bad as the Running Man. Emerald Software did that game as well.

  • Andrew Fisher: Have to agree with Vinny, I'm not a fan of the original arcade game, and this was a very lacklustre conversion. I suppose the ending is just about acceptable, but still lacks imagination.

  • Brendan Phoenix: Yeah, the arcade game sucked badly but had the nice graphics - whilst this version just sucked badly.

Ending pretty similar to the arcade - it's only saving grace.

FINAL SAY: This seems to be the usual thing for this type of game.

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
