Ultimate Wizard is a fancier version of the famous Jumpman game by Epyx. I'm not a huge fan of either game but they seem very popular amongst the C64 nuts out there...

Ultimate Wizard is a colourful platform game where you have to guide your wizard around the single screen levels to collect a key before exiting the screen via the lock. It's not as simple as it sounds as each item is usually in a tricky location and getting to them involves leaping platforms and dangerous objects or avoiding enemies. It's quite tricky as the controls are pretty sluggish and the wizard dies when he falls a few feet, but you do have various spells to use throughout the levels that are very handy when facing tricky foes. There are tons of levels to beat so there's a lot to get through. I can see how this game has great appeal, but for me it was a bit too difficult and very frustrating. Graphically it's not bad with cool animations, weird sprites and interesting level designs. Definitely give this a go if you like platform games as I imagine this is up there with the best on the C64...

Yaaaaay... 100!

And so you come to the end...

...of your long and arduous journey...

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used a stack of cheats from a cracked version, but this still took a long time to beat as there are some really hard levels. I was in desperate need of a level skipper, but couldn't find one!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The ending is a level where you cannot die. You can see your enemies wandering about below you in a small tunnel. You can collect treasure which reveals the final end message above you. A large '100!' is displayed in the background and the message that is revealed reads 'YOUR FOES SALUTE YOUR VICTORY - MARCH FORTH PROUD OF YOUR DEEDS! YOU ARE NOW A MASTER WIZARD!'

  • Neil: I like that. Quite a novel way to end a game by utilising the game code to fit an ending in there. 4/10.
  • Vinny: I love these kind of Jumpman games :) I can't work out what it is, but they seem to pull me in and grab a hold real tight! Even though they are tough games, they are certainly fun to play :)

It's a toughie one this because I'm not sure if we should include the final screen/room in the actual game ending; BUT, because you do have to collect the items to reveal the ending message then I am happy to see it all as the actual ending and reward it a fitting 4/10 too.

FINAL SAY: It's not one that will blow you away, but at least there is some sort of finale after a lot of difficult levels.

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
