> TOPPER THE COPPER by English Software

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Topper the Copper is a really odd platform game by English software where you play the role of a police officer, who seems to be a dustbin with springs for legs...

In the game you have to bounce around the various screens collecting eight safes that are hidden within the complex. Once all eight safes are found you will have enough pieces of a clue to be able to accuse one of the suspects in the courtroom. You can then escort him to the jail and win the game.

The graphics are chunky but cute and it plays quite well although the control method is sometimes frustrating. Especially getting into the bucket elevators. It's very hard too, so you will need to be very good to beat this one without cheating.

"Off to jail with you!"

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used cheats to stop the clock and Topper's energy drain. I then collected all the clue pieces and marched the suspect to the jail. He was banged up and the game was won!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once the suspect is taken to jail the border flashes various colours and an odd noise is heard (this noise changes slightly if it's the wrong suspect, and you get a lower ranking). If the suspect is the correct man, the game ends and you are given the highest ranking of commissioner - which you can see on the headquarters hierarchy that is displayed along with your final score.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: A flashing border and a high score table just ain't good enough copper. The less said about the noises at the end of the game the better... 1/10.

  • Vinny: I'd never played this game until Neil sent over the ending. I actually like it; it's my kind of game - though I could have done with a few more screens. It reminds me a little of Thing on a Spring, but not so polished or as fun. It's still worth a play or two, and has a lot of character - even though I'm not too sure what the main character is supposed to be!

As for the ending... WHAT?! There's plenty of space left in the code to add something in like an animation sequence or an epilogue! What a wasted opportunity. 0.5/10 from me!
  • Andy Vaisey: Yes, very reminiscent of 'Things on a Spring', but definitely a poor man's version in every conceivable way. Typical of most of English Software's output unless I'm mistaken. The ending is pretty dire.
  • Gaz Spence: A filthy ending that should turn itself in.
  • Andrew Fisher: What I remember most about this game was the adverts - Topper The Copper will be a whopper!

Sadly that was not true. It seems to take bits of Whirlinurd and Thing on a Spring and turn them into something worse. The ending is not very arresting, either...
  • Brendan Phoenix: Get that truncheon out......and continue to smack the creator of this ending!

FINAL SAY: Very poor. I expected some animated sequence at the end of this one.

G.E. RATING: 1 / 10
