• Completed by Inge Pedersen

CRL software never really did it for me. Their titles seemed to lack that final polished look and feel that would make them worthy top titles. If anyone asked me to name as many CRL titles as I could, the only ones that come to mind are OINK! and The Rocky Horror Show... and they're not particularly outstanding games.

Unfortunately, To Hell and Back is another of those lacklustre CRL titles that just doesn't cut the mustard. It's attempt to be a Ghost n Goblins clone just makes it fall flat on its face with its outdated graphics and annoying in-game tune. Saying that - it does give you a sense of anticipation to see more and to actually play through the game and see the later levels. It was definitely not worth the asking price of £9.95!

I'm not holding my breath for a ground-breaking ending...

The 11th and final boss!

Collect the final item...

The screen starts to clear...

Our hero jumps for joy...

...

...and the game comes to a close.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:

  • Inge: Inge cheated all the way to the end :)

  • Vinny: I cheated too - but I just froze the game with my Action Replay Cartridge, went to MONITOR, and typed 'G 6353' - which is where the game ending sequence begins ;-)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have defeated the 11th and final boss, you collect the final item and the ending kicks in... our hero is seen jumping up and down on Nick's gravestone, and the word "CONGRATULATIONS" is displayed. The ending is accompanied by the same, annoying in-game tune.

COMMENTS:

  • Inge: How anyone can clock this game without any cheat is beyond me. Even with unlimited lives and energy, it was still difficult to master.

To get to the end, you have to fight 10 bosses, but you have to choose the right path through the underground levels. If you drop down a wrong ledge, you cannot go up again, and thus get stuck.

  • Vinny: I was quite surprised to see this ending! I was expecting just some standard text, but we also get treated to a bit of animation. 4/10 from me.
  • Andrew Fisher: To Hell and Back is an apt title - it is so difficult! A very simple animation to round off the here's epic struggle.

And if you want another decent CRL title (of which there are few) then there's Tau Ceti.
  • Andy Vaisey: A CRL game... RUNAWAY!!!!!!!

Oh... the ending? Well, there's some animation. Points for that at least...
  • Brendan Phoenix: I think I attempted this and could not get anywhere and Inge took over. The game is very boring and bland, nothing special - perhaps the ok-ish ending is the only redeeming feature.

FINAL SAY: Surprised to see such an ending!

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
