> THROUGH THE TRAP DOOR by Piranha

• Completed & Reviewed by Vinny Mainolfi

Hopefully you will have seen and played the first incarnation of this arcade adventure game, Trap Door, where you take on the role of Berk the Servant, who has to carry out all of his Master's (AKA 'The Thing Upstairs') requests in order to complete the game. Through the Trap Door is much of the same and at times it's hard to distinguish between the two games; but that aside, it's still a fun game to play. Unfortunately, ZZAP! 64 magazine found the game far too frustrating and only scored it 44%!

The final task is complete...

...and Berk flies through the air...

...with the greatest of ease...

"Weeeeeeeeeeeee..."

"Incoming!"

"BONK!"

"Get up Berk!"

"HELLO!"

"Phew. He's still alive."

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Like the original game, I honestly can't remember completing this game as it has been in the offline archive for a long time! I'm sure I used a walkthrough (",).

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once Berk has completed the final task, the screen flashes and then Berk is shown falling through the air followed by his two friends. Berk finally hits the ground and the words "HOME SWEET HOME" appear, along with a small ditty.

COMMENTS:

  • Vinny: I actually enjoyed this ending much more than the original. There's a good bit of animation in there and you also get a sense of accomplishment and completion. 4/10 from me.
  • Andrew Fisher: You know, I avoided playing this because of the terrible ZZAP review - when Steve Jarratt said that Julian Rignall had smashed a joystick in frustration, I thought it was not worth playing. It's a basic but interesting ending, certainly better than just a simple message.
  • Gaz Spence: I think this and its prequel are brave attempts from a stylistic point of view but don't quite work in the gameplay department. As for the ending - I've seen far worse but far better too so 4 is about the right score.
  • Brendan Phoenix: I just remember these games (Popeye, Flunky, etc) moving so slooooooow - never really grabbed me although the big sprites looked great.

Half decent ending to be fair.
  • Andy Vaisey: Awful game complete with rubbish ending.

FINAL SAY: It's better than the original!

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
