> THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE by Alternative Software

• Completed by Neil Collins & Vinny Mainolfi
• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Thomas the Tank Engine by Alternative Software is based on the famous kids TV character. It's aimed at the younger C64 user with it's bright colourful graphics and recognisable train characters.

The aim is to help Thomas complete his tasks for the fat controller. This means guiding him along the track and avoiding all the obstacles in his way. It's not a great game and it can be beaten quite quickly and easily but it looks and plays very well. I imagine young kids would love this but it's not that great for grown ups. Nicely put together though.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:

  • Neil: I played it and quickly completed all tasks.

  • Vinny: As usual, I hacked the ending by using my Action Replay Cartridge and jumping to memory location: $1378. Simple.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The final screen shows the happy fat controller in the centre of the screen. A
message is displayed that reads 'WELL DONE THOMAS. YOU HAVE FINISHED ALL THIS WEEKS JOBS'.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: Not really my cup of tea, but I'm sure this one would appeal to youngsters. The ending is fair enough for this kind of game. 2/10.

  • Vinny: Back in 2008 I purchased this game on the SEGA Megardrive for my daughter when she was 4 years old. Though she won't admit it now, she enjoyed watching Thomas and so I thought it would be fun if she played the game. We both enjoyed the concept and played it many time, and so a few months later I loaded up the Commodore 64 version. By that time, she wasn't bothered about Thomas any more... but I still played it ;-)

As for the ending... it's a typical 'Alternative one screen, bit of graphics and message' ending. 2/10 from me too.
  • Andrew Fisher: I must have been about 30 when I first played this. I actually thought it was quite good for an educational game and out across a real flavour of the Thomas stories.

    Unsurprisingly the ending is simple.

FINAL SAY: Another typical Alternative Software ending.

G.E. RATING: 2 / 10
