• Completed & Reviewed by Frank Gasking

Terror of the Deep is one of those games that every time I load up, just takes me back to those wonderful days of picking up Commodore Format magazine and having the game FREE on the covertape. I never fully got into the game, but tried my best to navigate around and find Nessie. Never understood what I was supposed to do (as I couldn't be bothered, back then, to read the instructions)...

Uh - what's that?!

IT'S EMU!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:

  • Frank: If you go to location $05D5 and put in $02... it triggers off the ending.

  • Vinny: You can also fire up the ending by freezing the game with an Action Replay Cartridge, going to MONITOR MODE and typing: G 0BF9 (which dirty jumps to the game ending location $0BF9).

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Loch Ness monster pops its head up, and then it goes to the congratulations page where you have saved both Nessie and the Loch. I think there is another ending where you blow up Nessie as well and just save the loch - though I believe the Terror of the Deep is the crystals that you have to destroy.

COMMENTS:

  • Frank: Overall its a nice little ending, a nice sequence where Nessie appears in front of you and then just the generic newspaper page with congrats text. Certainly one of the better endings, and a long unsolved mystery solved :) - I love ICU64! ;-) 4/10.

  • Vinny: This really isn't my kind of game and so I haven't really spent too much time playing through the game.

As for the ending... I guessed that's what we'd see and hear. 3/10 from me.
  • Brendan Phoenix: Did not realise this had come off the wanted page - was on their for a loooong time, so great to see the ending.
  • Andrew Fisher: I did enjoy playing this when I got it on the cover tape, but I never felt like I was getting very far with it.

Good to know there is an ending, although it was fairly safe to assume it would be a variation on the newspaper headline. 3/10.
  • Gaz Spence: It's funny that I've just responded to a thread on Lemon 64 about steampunk style games on the C64 referencing this very game. I was drawn into the otherworldly atmosphere of the game when it appeared on the CF cover tape. I never got too far into the game but found it strangely compelling. I particularly like the sound effects that help to notch up the tension. The ending is nice to see, although perhaps the newspaper headline effect is a little unoriginal.
  • Neil Collins: Well done to Frank on Terror of the Deep.

I was on the final bit. Blew up all the pods - just couldn't find Nessie.

A tricky one off the list. Top stuff.

FINAL SAY: Phew! I can't believe we finally solved the Nessie mystery!

G.E. RATING: 3.5 / 10
