> TANK by Ocean

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Tank by Ocean is a very basic shoot-em-up where you control a tank that is viewed from overhead. You can scroll in all directions, as you make your way up the screens through the different zones to reach the end of sector three. There are plenty of tanks and soldiers to fight on the way and items to collect.

The graphics are average, and colourful, but the game is very basic and boring.

There's not much else to say about this one...

Oooo... THE END in the playing area!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite lives cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: At the end of the third sector there is a small base with the words 'The End' displayed on the ground. On entering the base the game is won. A 'CONGRATULATIONS - GAME OVER' message scrolls across the screen while a victory tune plays, before the game restarts.

  • Neil: It's got a short ending with a jolly tune. Nothing else. 3/10.
  • Vinny: Back in the nineties, I abandoned by Commodore 64 (not for long!) and spent a lot of my spare cash on Public Domain (PD) Software. One of my favourite PD titles was a game called Tanx, which had you guessing the trajectory of a tank and firing missiles to see if you can wipe out your opponent - human or CPU. I used to spend HOURS playing it and I've always wanted a C64 equivalent. Unfortunately, this isn't it! NEXT!

With regards to the ending... tanks for nothing! 2.5/10 from me.
  • Gaz Spence: One of those obscure Ocean releases that went under the radar, although apparently a coin-op conversion. The graphics and gameplay are equally mediocre. The ending, whilst at least providing a short ditty and scrolling text, is bog standard too.
  • Brendan Phoenix: Tanx is SUPERB - got it free with an issue of Amiga Action. Loved the speech samples in it as well - great 2 player game.

This is a conversion of the SNK game TNKIII - ending is just about the bare minimum of what you would find acceptable.
  • Andrew Fisher: This one could have been better with support for the rotational controls (I.e. the Cheetah 125 Plus), but it's a pretty average conversion - much like Victory Road and the terrible Guerilla Wars Ocean released around that time. A very lacklustre ending.
  • Andy Vaisey: Tanx on the Amiga - a great game, Vinny! I think I got it on a magazine coverdisk, maybe Amiga Computing...

As you say, this isn't the same sadly. This is quite on old game with a boring ending. Shame.

FINAL SAY: The ending ain't too bad considering.

G.E. RATING: 3 / 10
