> SPORE by Bulldog / Mastertronic

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Spore by Bulldog is a game that I bought after the marvellous review it had in Zzap64. I think they went a bit overboard on this one. It was pretty good for £1.99, but the game is not as wonderful as they made it out to be...

The game is played from an overhead perspective and the sprites are tiny. You control a star shaped craft around fifty levels of a laboratory. Deadly spores are multiplying on each level and attack you as soon as they appear, so you need to destroy their hives as soon as you can. The aim is to collect all the barrels of pesticide on each level in order to progress to the next. You will need to deactivate gates by hitting switches and change angles of mirrors to deflect lasers in order to reach all areas of the levels. You can collect antidotes that repel the spores for a short time, which comes in very handy. There are also energy barrels scattered around the place which will need collecting in order to top up your energy levels.

It's all very frantic and fun to play, but it does get very repetitive and the visuals are incredibly dull; however, the gameplay is what makes this a great value game, but don't expect it to be spectacular...

The final level is complete...

...and comes to a close.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite energy cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: If you manage to beat all fifty levels, you get a message on the screen which reads 'WELL DONE! YOU HAVE CLEARED ALL SECTORS'.

  • Neil: Shockingly bad end to this one. I don't imagine anyone reached the end without cheating - so don't waste your time trying. It's not worth it. 1/10.
  • Vinny: I loved Mastertronic; they were my saviours. Back in the eighties I didn't get much pocket money and I was too lazy to get a Saturday job; but that didn't matter because Mastertronic games were so cheap, and it meant that I could buy at least one a week! Along came Spore. I only bought it because I collected Mastertronic titles, but after a few games, I was hooked and would play it for hours. For £1.99, this game was great value! Tough to complete, but great to play.

As for the ending... hmmmm... maybe Jim was having a bad day! 1/10 from me too.
  • Andrew Fisher: Just to clarify - Spore is by Jim Baguley, not Jim Bagley (more famous as a Spectrum programmer).

I got this in a batch of games with a second-hand C64, I really like the effect of the moving spores; it reminds me of the classic Mutants by Ocean. But given the way it was presented it was always going to be a simplistic ending.

FINAL SAY: Another incredibly weak ending.
