> SLUG by Alternative Software

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Here's a great game I stumbled upon whilst scouring the deepest, darkest depths of Gamebase 64 for my next crazy hack...

Slug by Alternative Software (not to be mistaken for Steg the Slug by Codemasters) is a cute arcade platformer that comprises of 20 fun-packed levels. It's a very simple game that requires you to bounce around platforms collecting hearts (5 to complete each level) whilst avoiding the various nasties dotted around the place. There's also a time-bomb to collect and defuse before it explodes!

The graphics and sound are very complimentary to the game and help to wrap it into a neat budget title. Give it a try because it's challenging and addictive...

Level 20 is complete!

Not long now!

The lovers are reunited.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I completely ripped the code to pieces and created a crazy hack that allowed me to press the Commodore Key to jump straight to the ending :-)

Just as an extra piece of info... I fixed two bugs within the game that made it freeze, leaving you with half a game to play and no game ending to see.

With regards to the bitmap picture I created for the crazy hack... does anyone recognise what original image I manipulated? ;-)

And finally - I couldn't find one single person with an original of the game so that I could scan the instructions for the crazy hack documents, and so I wrote my own!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have completed level 20, the screen changes to a sunset scene where our hero and 'Susie' are reunited. The words 'THE END' are shown above our two lovers.

  • Vinny: I really enjoyed this game, and even though I've hacked and completed it, I'll return to it again for the challenge.

As for the ending... considering it's a budget title that would have cost £1.99, the ending it great! 5/10 from me.
  • Andy Vaisey: Awwww... what a sweet ending. Now throw salt on them...
  • Andrew Fisher: This is a game I had never heard of until Vinny started searching for the instructions. Great ending, makes me interested in giving it a go.

And that intro image is from the other slug budget game, Steg the Slug by Codemasters...
  • Brendan Phoenix: Not a lot of thought (how many times have we seen this sort of ending) and what is there is far too short but to give credit where it is due, it is a cheapo title and they have put an animated end on there. 5/10

FINAL SAY: A cool little game with a surprising ending! :-)

G.E. RATING: 5 / 10
