Where had this one been hiding! A few weeks before adding this game to the site, I submitted an original .TAP version of the game to Gamebase 64 for preservation. It then dawned on me that the game has never been checked for an ending, AND it doesn't appear to have had a trainer created for it. And so, on a July afternoon I sat down and proceeded to put things right... but something else happened too! I sat down for the first time in 28 years and actually played this cool game. I didn't realise how much fun it really is - all be it ZZAP!64 magazine didn't rate it very well. So - before actually seeing the ending or using my cheats, have a few goes and see how far you can get...

"Get the old blue rinse!"

The End!

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: It's a long winded story, but the short of it is that I started off just looking through the code for some cheats for the Hack n Cheat page, but then decided to build a full-blown crazy hack, which you can download from HERE. Just press '£' during game play to see the end! Simple :)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have destroyed the wicked, old Margaret Thatcher, you are teleported back to the beach where you create the following message in pebbles: "CONGRATULATIONS. YOU HAVE KILLED ALL THE POLYTIKIANS AND YOU HAVE MANAGED TO SCORE #######"

  • Vinny: OMG! I can be REALLY thick some times!! I've ONLY JUST noticed that the word "POLYTIKIANS" is a play on the word "POLITICIANS"! D'oh...

To be honest with you, Seaside Special is one of those games that I've always owned (I currently have 3 copies!), but never really sat down and played. To my surprise, it's actually a fun game to play - despite the fact that ZZAP!64 score it 61%!! Okay - so it's a little short, but it's certainly worth playing through a few times :)

As for the ending... it's not going to win any medals, but it certainly surprised me that there was one! In fact, I always thought this one was sitting on our NO ENDINGS page! A pleasant little ending, but a low scoring one I'm afraid... 2/10.
  • Andrew Fisher: Tony Gibson was heavily into politics and environmental issues, he created Seaside Special after stories of contaminated beaches near the Sellafield nuclear plant and would go on to write Rainbow Warrior for MicroStyle (named after the Greenpeace boat and featuring affirmative action against pollution).

It's a tricky game, as many of Taskset's titles were, but I do enjoy it. Nice to know it has an ending, even if it is a little simple.
  • Brendan Phoenix: I too was under the impression this was a no ending.

I had this on a Beau Jolly Computer Hits compilation (10 I think) think Sorcerer of Claymorgue Castle was on there too.

I did enjoy this game, proper old skool classic and can get quite difficult on the beach with those damn crabs - then the MP's speed up too.

The ending could have been a whole lot better though - sure they could have squeezed something else in there.

A lot of the MP's are still really recognisable now (probably thanks to memories of Spitting Image, etc) makes you think if we would recognise the lot in now if they were in a game in 2012 - never mind in nearly 30 yrs time!

FINAL SAY: It's worth a play, but the ending isn't much cop :(

G.E. RATING: 2 / 10
