> SCARPER! by MC Lothlorien

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Scarper! by MC Lothlorien is an original little shoot-em-up made back in 1984. It's not your standard side scrolling blaster. This one features an original little twist. The aim of this game is to protect your little army of men that march along the bottom of the screen from all the enemies that attack. You can live with some casualties but the game is over when all men die or you run out of lives yourself. It's very colourful and has many weird enemies and scenarios. It's fun to play and is beatable without cheats. It does get frantic too so you need to be quite sharp to progress. This is another game I'd missed out on and am happy I finally discovered it. Definitely worth a look.

All your men are still in one piece :)

"WHAT?! How DARE you!"

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I poked the code so that my little men could take multiple hits and that my lives never decreased. Easy!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The ending varies depending on how many men survive. The best possible ending is when all ten men get to the finish. A message then appears which reads 'IMPOSSIBLE! ARE YOU A HACKER?'. Oh no, I've been found out!

  • Neil: Cool to see a ending that varies, and a cheeky message acknowledging my hacking, but at the end of the day it's only a short line of text. 1/10.
  • Vinny: I'm a big fan of Choc-a-Bloc Charlie also by Steve Hughes, and I remember seeing both games advertised in old micro magazines, but never really paying much attention to Scarper! To me the adverts and cover art for this game weren't interesting enough for me to part with my money and so I never got to see the game. Until now! Twenty-eight years on I finally load it up and have a play... and what a fine game it is. It's full of great little touches: fun sprites, delightful music and fast-paced game play. It's definitely one to look out for...

...but then comes the ending. So much charm and energy is not carried over from the game, and unfortunately this simple text ending message leaves me annoyed and disheartened :( 0.5/10 from me.
  • Andy Vaisey: Never seen or played this one. Will give it a go over the weekend.

I like the idea of the ending varying depending on how many men are saved, but it's spoiled by being text only.
  • Andrew Fisher: Like Andy, I've never played this but will fire it up later thanks to the 1541 Ultimate. I didn't play Chock-a-Block Charlie till the 90's either.

Anyway, interesting to see an ending that changes according to how well you do - and funny to see the author think it was impossible to win the game without cheating!
  • Gaz Spence: A tiny bit of thought with the ending message changing depending on your performance - a forerunner of the psychiatric report at the end of GTA 5 methinks.

FINAL SAY: Original, but very simple and boring. Shame, as it's a very cool little game.

G.E. RATING: 1 / 10
