R-Type is one of the best shoot-em-up's on the C64
in my opinion. It's a very good conversion of the
original arcade game. There are 8 levels to fight your
way through before confronting the final alien boss at
the end.

OMG!

The ending begins...

The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
Using an infinite lives cheat.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?:
I eventually destroyed the final boss, which was very
easy, but took a lot of shooting. At one point I thought
he wasn't going to die, but eventually he exploded. The
scenery then fades and your ship continues through
space. After that you get a cinematic message of thanks
scrolling up the screen while many spaceships fly past.
COMMENTS:
- Neil: A fine
game and an ending to match. You need to play this game
if you are a shoot-em-up fan.
- Vinny: Here's
another one of those 'Marmite' type of games: you either
love it or hate it. I just can't seem to get on with the
main sprite as it just looks sloppy and incorrectly
coloured. Anyway, the ending is cool and deserves the
6/10 that Neil has given it.
- Andy Vaisey: I
could never get on with this 'official' conversion; I
much preferred the 'unofficial' Katakis. Yes, I know it
was done by the same people, but R-Type feels rushed,
which of course it was. Anyway the point is mute,
because with the likes Armalyte and a wealth of budget
shooters like I.O. and Slayer, R-Type struggles to be
seen in the crowd. Don't get me wrong, R-Type isn't a
bad game but it's hampered by a poor tape multiload
system and, now for the world to see, a really poor
ending.
- Andrew Fisher:
I never rated the C64 version of R-Type either, but then
you can make allowances for the team completing the game
in only 6 weeks... That's quite a nice ending.
- Brendan Phoenix:
Cant really call the ending as it's a near as damn it
replica of the arcade original, so kudos for that. Above
average
FINAL SAY:
A
fitting end to a classic game.
