Prison Riot by Players software is 2D action game in the style of Joe Blade. It looks like a Spectrum conversion, as the graphics are monochrome, and it's quite slow and poorly animated - a proper C64 version would have been far better.

Your mission is to track down the gang leaders in the prison where a riot is currently happening. They are normally found on the rooftops, so you need to find them, defeat them by playing a sub-game, and then get them lifted off the roof by crane. The map is pretty big, with many cells to explore. You can collect extra energy, ammo, keys and boots as you go. There are tons of enemies to blast or avoid as you navigate the confusing prison - so you may need a map to complete it.

Overall it's a decent budget game. I particularly liked the sub-game where you have to complete the word 'PORRIDGE' by manipulating the letters in a small grid.

Get rid of the final Roof-top Boss.

The End.

  • Neil: I used cheats that gave me infinite energy, ammo and boots.
  • Vinny: I hacked the ending by freezing the game with my Action Replay Cart, entering MONITOR, and typing G 230C, which starts the ending at location $230C.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: After lifting the final gang leader from the prison roof, the game ended. A short message appeared which read 'WELL DONE YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR MISSION'. The game then restarted.

  • Neil: A cheap game with a very cheap ending. A huge let down. 2/10.
  • Vinny: The ending is cheap just like the game! It's a standard text message with recycled music. 1/10 from me.
  • Andrew Fisher: A substandard re-hash of Joe Blade with an ending that should be sentenced to jail...
  • Andy Vaisey: Joe Blade is superior in most respects, particularly the graphics; I can't even look at these monochrome stills here depicting Prison Riot, let alone load the game to see the ending. I'll give this a miss and take everyone's word for it that the ending is rubbish. :-(

    Down with mono-GFX on a C64...
  • Brendan Phoenix: Very Joe Blade-y

Just a standard budget type ending which is of no shock at all - a shock ending would be a bar of soap and a prison shower.

FINAL SAY: That's all? Oh deary me...
