OUTRUN EUROPA
by U.S. Gold
|
• Completed
& Reviewed by Neil Collins
Out Run is an arcade classic, but unfortunately the
Commodore 64 conversion was naff. I had never played
Outrun Europa on the C64 until today and I was
interested in seeing if the game had been improved upon;
I believe it has. The graphics aren't great, but this
game offers a bit more variety than its predecessor, as
you can now race various vehicles. The aim of the game
is pursue some villains, who have stolen your car,
through various European cities. As usual, it's against
the clock, so you need to drive hard and fast to reach
the next checkpoint. There are a few more obstacles this
time around in the form of oil spills, barriers and the
police cars. It's quite a tough challenge...

The final level is
complete.

Time for some
jibber-jabber!

Blah, blah, blah :)

The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
With infinite time cheat and a level skipper.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?:
When you finally catch up with the villains, you receive
some top secret documents which you have to get back to
a government agent quickly. Once you complete this final
run, the words "MADE IT!!", appear across the
screen. There then follows a short sequence of pictures
and text (see above screen shots), which show our hero
returning the documents back into safe hands. The agent
reveals that he had left the Porsche for you to use in a
previous level. The game then restarts.
COMMENTS:
- Neil:
Fairly good end. A few pics, but no sound or animation.
- Vinny:
Considering the game is soooooo good, you'd have thought that
they would have made a bit of an effort with the ending:
where's the Jeroen Tel ending tune?! :(
- Andy Vaisey:
For me the ending is a little like the game, a bit
disappointing. While aspects of Outrun Europa are pretty
good (the roadside GFX, some of the music, etc.), there
were things that were not so hot. Some of the sprites
are *very* dodgy, in particular the player's Ferrari
F40, and sometimes the vehicle handling smells a bit
funny, particularly when compared to Turbo Outrun,
Powerdrift and Turbo Charge. Thus the ending continues
the trend. The ingredients are there, just not in the
correct proportions.
- Gaz Spence: The
ending's ok, but I'd have expected a JT tune and better
pics.
- Andrew Fisher:
As Andy says, a little disappointing - particularly
compared with the glitzy Turbo Outrun.
- Brendan Phoenix:
If they had added an ending tune this would have
been a 6/10. Just a pity as always good to see some
little pics in an ending - much better than the standard
'Congratulations' message. As some of the comments state
above - a missed opportunity
FINAL SAY: Could have been so much better :(
