> NOBBY THE AARDVARK by Thalamus

• Completed & Reviewed by Vinny Mainolfi

This game cracks me up (",) There is so much humour wrapped up in this little gem that you could almost be arrested by the cops for playing it over and over again...

Nobby the Aardvark appeared later on in the Commodore 64's life - in fact towards the end of its commercial life. That didn't deter it from being a brilliant piece of work and earning an overall score of 93% from ZZAP! 64 magazine. And well deserved too because the graphics are fun and colourful, and the game play and levels are to die for. It was what we were starting to expect from the great game makers themselves Ash & Dave. So what of the game ending ...

And so there final chapter begins ...

An island somewhere far, far away.

It's only inhabitants are giant red ants! But hold on a second;
who is this materialising?

"Catch those faking ants!"

"GOTCHA!"

"Mmmmm..."

"Yum-Yum."

"What's that?"

SPLAT!

And of he scuttles ...

...The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED? Cheated!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The ending opens with an explanation as to where we are with the final storyline. The screen then switches to a view of the ant's island, which shows animated smoke coming out of the volcano and sharks swimming in the sea.

We are then taken to a close-up of the beach, which shows the ants running around and having the time of their lives.

Our hero, Nobby, then materialises in the middle of the ants' party and starts to chase them around the island. He finally catches one and devours it before your very eyes!

Suddenly, a MASSIVE red ant falls out of the sky and squashes Nobby to the size of a pancake. He survives the flattening and scurries away to the left of the screen, leaving the big red ant to say, "THE END".

COMMENTS:

  • Vinny: This game ending is pure comedy at its best. The graphics, colours, sound and humour all add up to make a hilariously fitting ending to this superb game. It really is one for your game ending collection and is certainly worthy of the GOLD MEDAL AWARD. 10/10.

  • Andrew Fisher: I loved this game, from the moment I played the demo. The graphics throughout are brilliant and it has a wicked sense of humour.

That sense of humour includes the amazing intro and outro sequences. I have completed it myself, and it was worth the effort. 9/10 from me.

  • Gaz Spence: An excellent game that plays to the c64's strengths - great sprites and smooth scrolling. Added to the mix is the humorous ending, where the tables are somewhat turned on Nobby. 9 out of 10 for the game but 8.5 for the ending would be a fair assessment in my opinion.

  • Brendan Phoenix: On a satisfaction level on viewing this ending after completing the game, it deserves the 10/10.

Great little animated ending, nice little animation of rubbing your tummy when you eat up the ants, little ditty, etc - all makes up for a more than satisfying ending.

Another great end game sequence from Thalamus.

  • Frank Gasking: Stunning ending, and they really put a lot of blood and sweat into this game! 10/10.
