The New Zealand Story is a cute arcade platform game, where you control a little trainer-wearing Kiwi chick through many levels, hoping to free your Kiwi chums that have been abducted by the evil Leopard-Seal . It rates up there with Bubble Bobble as one of the best arcade conversions on the C64. Its quite easy to play, but very difficult to complete...

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using an infinite lives and energy cheat. I worked my way through the many levels, defeating the end of level boss animals and rescuing the Kiwis until I finally found the Leopard Seal. He took some beating, but I eventually blasted him to pieces from my little spaceship. ("That's more than I did; I just used a level skip cheat" - Vinny)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: You get a nice message from the Kiki to tell you that the tribe can now live without fear of being traded on the black market - and you are thanked for all your efforts. A cool little tune plays in the background while this message is displayed.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: Average end to a good game. Better than the usual 'WELL DONE' message. A decent enough ending. 4/10.
     
  • Vinny: WOW - what a cool game! I'd never actually played it even though I own the original. Great levels and loads to do, which is my kind of game.

    As for the ending... Neil was spot on when he said that it was better than the usual endings. It's cheerful and has a great epilogue. 4/10 from me too.
     
  • Frank Gasking: Another game that takes me back to my childhood (around 1990-91) with its cute jingles and tunes throughout. I used to spend hours on this game trying to beat it, but only really ever got to around world 3 where things began to get quite tough. Overall comparing to the arcade, the game is a brilliant conversion - very colourful and tight game play. The ending I think is pretty good, though Richard Palmer has done better with Wec Le Man's ending.

    Something quite fun to mess around with is getting to world 2, dying and then letting the tape run and load the next world in. Doesn't quite work, and you end up with world 3 going a bit haywire.
     
  • Andrew Fisher: A nice piece of music at the end, but not really a great ending. Interesting to note that Choice Software were doing the conversion, but it was dropped at the last minute and Richard Palmer created the final version in-house at Ocean. Choice took what they had learned and created CJ's Elephant Antics...
     
  • Brendan Phoenix: Nothing like the arcade original and we know Ocean can do it after the Space Gun ending.

    I found this ending pretty mundane to be honest. Standard text over a black screen, just with the character sprite next to the text - not much imagination there.

    Surely and ending pic could have been squeezed in, some form of a background and maybe some scrolling end credits.

    A disappointment. 3/10.
