Mr Mephisto is a dark platform game by Bug-Byte. The aim of the game is to make it to heaven, by making your way through what seems to be hell - similar to Dante's Inferno, but it's not half as good a game. There are only six screens to beat, which contain various hellish beasts. You have to collect various items and press hidden buttons that reveal secret pathways to further levels. It's just a case of avoiding the enemies, collecting the right items and pressing the right buttons. It's very frustrating as one wrong move sends you back to the very start of the game. This isn't a game that I'd recommend...

Ah - the Angels are upon us...

...with a path laid to heaven...

...or is it really HELL!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using a sprite detection cheat and a few saved game states.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: If you make it to the last screen you will find the pearly gates. Pressing a button opens them up for you to enter. Once you walk through the gates a short end sequence begins. A circle of angelic looking symbols surround what I imagine to be your characters soul. They all float up the screen as if they are rising up into the heavens. At last our man gets to rest in peace.

  • Neil: That's not too bad really when you consider the actual game itself, and it's always good to see an end sequence, even if it isn't that exciting.

  • Vinny: I hadn't played this game until Neil sent in the ending, and I only load it up because I was intrigued as to how it played. I must admit that I found it incredibly frustrating, but also very addictive. It's just a shame that there are only 6 screens to play through :(

With regards to the ending itself, I am rather pleased with it! Okay, so it's very basic; but for 1984 it's rather cool. I know I would have been satisfied to have played the game through and seen this ending. I wanted to give it 5/10, but then I realised that the annoying ending tune was also in in-game, out-game and around-game tune - yawn.

  • Brendan Phoenix: Never played (or heard) of this game either.

Good little ending to be honest and much better than I would have guessed. Always good to see an animated ending, just shows some thought has gone into it. Would put a lot of full price games which came many years later to shame.

FINAL SAY: I've seen worst!

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
