Here's a rare and strange game...

Morphicle - The Transforming Car is a very strange game from The Power House, which has you controlling a car that also doubles up as a spaceship. But that's just the first stage, because the second has you flying a strange bubble ship through some underground cavers. Then(!), stage three presents you with a old-style sliding puzzle game, before giving you a password for the next level - and round you go.

The graphics are very basic, and so is the game play, but there is something very addictive about this game that had both Brendan and I totally captivated.

But there's a story as to how we actually got onto this weird game... Team member Brendan Phoenix opened a thread on the Lemon Forum asking if anyone knew how to play this game and if they had any hints as to how he could complete it. It's a bit of a rare game on tape, but I actually own an original and so I was able to scan the instructions for him - and at the same time preserving the full game and inlay for Gamebase 64. I also provided Brendan with some passwords that I grabbed from the code, and also some POKES to help him through. Finally he cracked it...

One final puzzle to complete...

The End!

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Brendan managed to do it with no cheats. He used the last password of 'INVI' that I provided to him, which was the final level.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once the final puzzle is completed, the words 'CONGRATULATIONS - BOMB DESTROYED. THE END' are displayed.

COMMENTS:

  • Brendan: I sort of knew what the ending would be and I was right, it's the EXACT same screen that you see that gives you the password for the next level, but this time it has The End instead. Same tune / no difference - very poor. 0.5/10 just for having 'THE END'.

  • Vinny: Having played the game a bit to obtain some of the cheats and codes for Brendan, I too guessed that it wasn't going to be an outstanding ending. 0.5/10 from me too.
  • Andrew Fisher: Such an odd mix of game styles for a budget game. The Power House never really hit the highs of Mastertronic or Codemasters in terms of quality releases.

    Anyway, text ending - bad.
  • Macc: Very poor ending for quite an oddball game!
  • Gaz Spence: Great to see the fruit of your labour even if it's a bad apple. Other tough game chalked off!
  • Brendan Phoenix: The 2nd level is actually ok - had to use a few save states to find my way around the map - which only reveals itself to you as you progress.

At least the game had a password system so you did you have to go back to the very start.
  • Andy Vaisey: 'The End'

    Whatever.

FINAL SAY: Glad we put this one to bed - finally!

G.E. RATING: 0.5 / 10
