> MEGANOVA by Alternative Software

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

I just don't get it... you'd think that if a software house consistently produced poor quality games, that eventually someone would notice; but in the case of Dinamic Software it appears that they were left to continue to produce poor releases for our beloved Commodore 64.

Meganova by Dinamic is a horizontal shoot-em-up that lacks any real action or excitement. When you start to play the game you'll realise why it was released as a budget game - it should have been a free game on the cover of Commodore Format magazine. It's very basic, simplistic and lacks many of the elements that you would expect from a classy SEU - which this isn't. Even ZZAP! 64 magazine thought this game was pants and scored it 32%.

All in all a very poor attempt at a shoot-em-up game, which means it's likely that the ending is going to be dire too...

The ship reaches its final destination and shimmers away...

All of a sudden, something else appears!

Ah-ha! A car.

Out hero comes sliding down the stairs...

...flies through the air...

...and lands securely in his car.

He then starts the engine...

...and shoots off.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used a trained version of the game, speeded it up in an emulator and just let the game play itself! It took around 30 seconds to get to the ending ;-)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once your ship has reached it final destination, it disappears and then a car appears. The main character then comes sliding down the stairs, landing in the car and then driving off. There's an ending message at the top of the screen that reads: "HOORAY: YOU'RE A REAL MAN".

  • Vinny: Wow! Now that was a surprise! I was expecting a typical "CONGRATULATIONS" screen, but instead there's a closing message and animation! Cool. 4/10 from me.
  • Andy Vaisey: Nice little ending. Shame the preceding game is utter tripe.
  • Brendan Phoenix: I like the statue of liberty screen - pretty cool. Same with the ending - not half bad, but not as good as their crowning glory ending.......Navy Moves
  • Andrew Fisher: That ending reminds of Battle of the Planets for some reason (the cartoon series, not the game based on it).

Meganova is a poor description. Belowaveragenova fits.

FINAL SAY: A smooth ending to a shite game!

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
