• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Magnetron by Broderbund is a space based shoot-em-up. It's played from an aerial viewpoint so you can fly your ship in all directions within the confines of each level. The aim is to conquer each fortress by blasting all of the guns that are placed on and within the fortress walls. Once all are destroyed you can return to your mother ship and blast off to the next one. You have to keep an eye on your fuel levels, but there are plenty of fuel pods scattered about to top your ship's level up.

The graphics are very simple, with plain backgrounds and basic sprites. There's hardly any animation or memorable visuals but the game is fun to play as you can pick up the controls instantly and get blasting away. Fans of games like Thrust & Asteroids might find this one pretty good. There are also tons of levels to beat so it'll keep you busy for a while.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I poked the gun counter down to zero so that I could clear each level in seconds.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: As the last gun post is blown up on level fifty, the fortress flickers and then explodes causing the star field to light up various colours. A message appears in the top panel which reads 'FORTRESS DESTROYED'. Your ship docks back with the mothership and your bonuses are added to your score. The mother ship then blasts off the side of the screen and a message appears in the top panel, which reads 'WELL DONE'. A view is then shown from inside the ship's cockpit while a tune starts playing. A planet's surface can be seen below as the ship moves through space with a star field whizzing past. A sequence of messages appear on the ship's computer, which reads 'INTERPLANETARY TRANSMISSION. EARTH DEFENCE FORCE BULLETIN #BX347. TO: HELIOS EXPLORATION STARSHIP. FROM: DEFENCE COUNCIL. PRIORITY: CLASS 1. CONGRATULATIONS CAPTAIN KRONOS! ALL ALIEN FORTRESSES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. THE PEOPLE OF EARTH THANK YOU. USE RE-ENTRY VECTOR 7732, CAPE CANAVERAL. WELCOME HOME FLEET ADMIRAL KRONOS.'

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: Cool graphics, music and ending message. Really happy with this one. I even had a promotion within a few minutes too ! Admiral eh.... 5/10.

  • Vinny: I've never played this game (maybe I need to check it out!), but I'm pleased to see that it has a nice enough game ending. 5/10 from me too.
  • Andrew Fisher: Repton and Repton springs to mind too (one a shoot 'em up from America, the other the BBC classic). More recently the PS3 had a game called Warhawk.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by the ending - it could have been your typical text screen but this one really feels like a good way to finish.
  • Andy Vaisey: As Andrew just stated, pleasantly surprising. Don't know this game so will give it a try.

FINAL SAY: That was cool ! That's much better than I expected from this simple game.

G.E. RATING: 5 / 10
