Magic Candle is an RPG ("hissss... boooo..." - Vinny) by Mindcraft. It's a game I really wanted to own as a kid, but never played it on a real C64. I recently decided to put the hours in to playing this game and found it to be a fantastic and absorbing RPG - certainly one of the best available for the C64.

The world is huge and will take you many weeks of playing to explore fully. You start by creating a new character who starts the game at a castle where you can invite other characters to join you on your quest to destroy the evil Dreax and restore the magic candle's power. Combat is a simple turn based affair, which is pretty quick so it doesn't drag the game play down. There are hundreds of items to collect, characters to interact with and villages to explore making this game fantastic value for money.

Graphically it is pretty good with neat, colourful characters and backgrounds.

If you liked playing the Ultima series of games, then you will love this game. Definitely one of the best RPG's I have ever played. You must check this one out.

The End.

Bubble Time!

Off you go then...

In the castle...

Time to eat!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I played it using a few walkthrough solutions I found online. I also hacked the code a little to make certain items magically appear inside my characters inventory.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have collected specific magical items and placed your three magic users on designated spots before the magic candle, you have to perform a ritual by chanting magical phrases. This causes the evil Dreax to appear and become trapped inside a captivity bubble before full power is restored to the magic candle. The heroes then return to King Rebnard's court to enjoy a banquet in their honour. Your heroes are given the title of 'Heroes of the candle'. The king then announces that evil exists in further lands where the quest will continue, but for now they must enjoy their moment of victory and toast the heroes great deed.

  • Neil: A neat ending with simple graphics. The story is wrapped up very well which suggests a sequel will follow. It's not an ending that will blow you away but it's decent enough reward for a lot of game playing hours. 5/10.
  • Vinny: I've never played this game because, as I'm sure you all know by now, I hate RPGs! But I do love this ending. Very nicely presented, a sweet epilogue, and cute little graphics. 6/10 from me!
  • Andrew Fisher: Really enjoyed watching that ending, good stuff. It's a game I never got round to trying - I have played quite a few RPGs and the idea appealed to me.
  • Andy Vaisey: Satisfying enough I guess. Could be better, could have been a whole lot worse!
  • Brendan Phoenix: I would get a good sense of achievement seeing this after completing the game. Pity about the lack of an ending tune, but a job well done overall.
  • Gaz Spence: The ending is better than those in the Ultima games but still underwhelming in the context of a massive challenge.

FINAL SAY: A fitting end to a great game.

G.E. RATING: 5.5 / 10
