So there I was, in my dressing gown, sitting, banging my head against the screen, and wondering WHY on earth this game ending looked SO familiar! I spent ages trying to work it out, but it wasn't until I read the WIKIPEDIA entry on Katakis that all was revealed. Take a look for yourself... DENARIS.

This is a fine R-Type style shoot-em-up game from Manfred Trenz and Andreas Escher: great graphics and fantastic sonics all wrapped up neatly in a superbly playable shoot-em-up.

So is this a typical Manfred Trenz game ending or has he let his standards slip?

Your ship has just flow out of fromthe right hand side of the
space station and is making a hasty retreat.

"She's gonna blow! (oo-er missus)"

And now the credits ...
The End (",)

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Brendan cheated and skipped straight to the ending :)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: You spaceship makes a swift exit from the right and flies off into outer space, leaving behind it TOTAL carnage as the space station explodes! This is then followed by a whole host of thanks and credits.

  • Vinny: Manfred Trez seems to be the king of game endings! He has produced yet another fine game ending which is only let down by the lack of sonics during the final credits (hence not receiving 10 / 10). The graphics and animation are cool and worth a look (",).
  • Andy Vaisey: Shame on you for not knowing that Denaris is a Katakis 'reskin'! All to do with the R-Type/Katakis controversy that also affected ZZAP! 64, with it's Katakis demo replaced last minute with Time Tunnel. Good days! ;)

Spooky... I downloaded Katakis a few days ago and have been playing it in my spare time. I'd forgotten what a rock hard, solid game it it...

A tidy ending in my book; like you said, shame about the sonics ;-)
  • Andrew Fisher: I did not play Katakis/Denaris until years after I had played Armalyte, so while I acknowledge it is very good the Thalamus game will always be better in my eyes.

Having said that, Katakis is up there with the great shoot 'em ups, and it's a great ending. I love the way the text reads like the credits of a film.
  • Brendan Phoenix: Sheer quality ending - if only every game had an ending like this.

I always remember the game from the ZzZAP!64 covertape fiasco as well

FINAL SAY: Another top ending from the man himself (",)

G.E. RATING: 8 / 10
