Joe Gunn is a cracking
arcade adventure game that was recommended to me by
Vinny. I had never come across this one before, and I'm
glad I have now done so. Thanks Vinny ! It's similar to
the likes of games such as Rick Dangerous and
Montezuma's Revenge. If you like these types of games, I
highly recommend this one. I found it very easy to play,
as the control method is excellent, the difficulty level
is just right, there's a lot to explore and many puzzles
to solve. The game is based in an Egyptian pyramid - the
lost tomb of the Crocodile King. You control our hero,
an archaeologist named Joseph J Gunn. Your aim is to
loot the tomb and escape with the treasure, avoiding
traps and solving puzzles as you go.

Anubis is no more.

Joe needs to make his
way towards the exit...

... and run for
cover!

The pyramid starts to
collapse.

GONE!

The epilogue.

The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
Using an infinite lives cheat and a walkthrough solution
that I found (which at times was very confusing).
SO WHAT HAPPENS?: After
exploring all seventy locations, collecting the masks,
ankhs, seals and pieces of the sundisk - I placed all
the items in their required locations, causing the evil
Anubis to die. I then made my way to the top of the
pyramid and placed the scarab into the slot which caused
the pyramid to shake. I then ran as fast as I could to
the exit, which triggered off the end sequence. This
shows our hero running across the screen as the pyramid
crumbles to the ground behind him. You are then told of
Joe Gunn's successful mission, and how he lived for many
years without anybody knowing of his deeds. You then see
how many gold masks you collected within the game and
the game restarts.
COMMENTS:
- Neil:
Excellent game
with a very good ending.
- Vinny: This game really takes me back to the golden age of
8-bit platformers. It truly is a delight to play and
a great achievement by the production team. I was
hoping that this game had a great little ending, and
I wasn't disappointed. Saying that, maybe a game
ending tune and some sound effects would have made
it a top scorer. More games like this, please :) 7/10.
FINAL SAY: A C64 classic in my opinion. The
ending was fitting for such an enjoyable game. Happy
days!
