Joe Blade 2 by Players is VERY similar to the first instalment, Joe Blade. As before, Joe Blade 2 is set in a 2D flip-screen environment with the main character having to collect items and save hostages. There really is no obvious improvement to the original game, and in some instances it's difficult to distinguish between the two. In my eyes it was a waste of a good opportunity to improve on an already good game, but Players seemed to have been happy with just churning out a very similar game, in the hope that it will make a similar, positive impact. ZZAP!64 didn't think so and only awarded the game 35% - as opposed to 92% that the original game received!

So was there any improvement on the original's game ending...

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I hacked the game with two simple cheats. If you know how to use the monitor in an emulator or the Action Replay Cartridge, start the game and then just do the following:

  • $007B 41
  • $0037 17

This will fool the game into thinking you have completed the tasks and jump you straight to the ending.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once all your tasks are complete and you escape, the ending screen appears, which reads: "CONGRATULATIONS. YOU HAVE PERFORMED VERY ADMIRABL[E]Y IN YOUR CLEANUP OF THE CITY." This is accompanied by a specific ending tune.

COMMENTS:

  • Vinny: Nope - no real improvement on the original, apart from a dedicated ending tune, which isn't particularly brilliant. And like the original, there is a spelling mistake in the ending text! A very static and boring ending. 2/10 from me.
  • Andrew Fisher: I sentence this one to a long stretch in the Mainolfi Penal Reform Centre for Bad Endings.

ZZAP were absolutely right - it's shoddy work to release such an obvious cash-in.
  • Brendan Phoenix: The first one was a good little cheapo game, although I had this one, I cant remember too much about it - says it all.

    Lame ending.
  • Andy Vaisey: The original was a decent little game but the sequel was so disappointing, just a cash in to rip off the unfortunate. Rubbish ending to boot.

FINAL SAY: Not much of an improvement from the first game :(

G.E. RATING: 2 / 10
