Jet-boys is a cracking little shoot-em-up by CRL. I
think I like this more than most because you can
actually get somewhere in it. You control a jet-pac
wearing spaceman, who has the task of destroying a
reactor which has been built on one of Saturn's moons by
some villain. The graphics are good with nice sprites
and parallax scrolling, it plays well and it's actually
possible to beat without cheating as there aren't that
many levels - which is a shame I suppose. You can
collect power-ups to boost your firepower, which you
will need to beat the various end of level guardians. I
think this is one of the better shoot-em-ups out there.

The final level is
complete!

That's the end of
that!

KA-BOOOOOOOOM!

White-out.

The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
I used an infinite lives cheat.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?:
Once you have blasted the last end of level guardian to
bits, a message scrolls across the screen reading 'REACTOR
DESTROYED'. The reactor is then shown exploding
before your final score is shown and the game restarts.
COMMENTS:
- Neil: Much
better than most games of the genre and with a nice
ending. Well worth a blast.
- Vinny: I've
only just played this game for the first time and it's
quite enjoyable. Nice graphics, cool sound and very
playable - it reminds me a little of Zybex. It's a pity
about the small playing area, which is about 2/3 of the
screen. Anyway, it's a neat little ending, but there are
elements missing that deem it to be a low scorer. A
thumping end tune and a little more text would have
done the trick.
- Brendan Phoenix:
I think that is a very poor ending. No congratulations,
some crappy explosion and a game over message. 2/10. CRL
did make some dire games on the C64 - best remembered
for their 'horror' adventures. Was it Rod Pike? Wonder
what has happened to him?
- Andy Vaisey:
Never played this game back in the day - I avoided 'CRL'
games like the plague, because their name on the case
usually meant the software inside would be crap. Having
said that, as mentioned above, they did release some
quality horror text adventures by Rod Pike, my
favourites being Dracula and Wolfman. And Jet-Boys?
Well, this game kind of breaks the CRL curse because it
isn't all out bad, but conversely, it isn't exactly
great either; kind of just below average. The 'Game
Over' ending is really poor and represents CRL quite
well in my book.
FINAL SAY: A neat little ending.
