Written by Jason Page, Head the Ball is a cute and colourful scrolling platformer that also comes with a shoot-em-up section to give it that added dimension. This game has a lot to offer the Commodore 64 gamer, what with it's cool game play, colourful graphics and great sonix; but it does get a little frustrating and tough in places. A very addictive little game that's worth checking out... but does it have a game ending worthy of a high mark?

The final level is complete!

Scores are on the doors...

Time for a bonus round before the ending...

"Shoot that muvva!"

The End!

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I think Gaz used a trained version with cheats :-)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have completed the final level and played through the bonus section, the ending screen appears with the following message: "CONGRATULATIONS. YOU HAVE FINISHED HEAD THE BALL." This is accompanied by an ending ditty.

  • Vinny: To be honest with you, I was expecting some kind of ending animation :( It's nice to have an ending ditty, but it could have been much longer. 1.5/10 from me.
  • Andrew Fisher: My least favourite game on the 4th Dimension compilation... And it's still really good fun! A shame there wasn't an animation - even just re-using the female ball from the title screen would have added something to the ending.
  • Gaz Spence: I first played this game from a covermount tape. I did persevere with it and got to around 3/4 of completing it. The overriding sense with playing the game is frustration, because of the difficult control method and dodgy collision detection. Still not too bad overall but the ending is very lame as per most Hewson games - just as well as I cheated to get there otherwise I would have felt cheated.
  • Andy Vaisey: Although, supposedly, the weakest game on the 4th Dimension Compilation, I found this quite enjoyable in short bursts. Never completed it though and to be honest, I would have been VERY disappointed if I had; the ending is atrocious.
  • Brendan Phoenix: Can't recall many Hewson games having great endings (same with CRL) and this sum's them up for me.
