Grand Prix Simulator by Codemasters was a very popular budget priced race game. I remember a lot of my friends owning a copy when we were kids. There are twelve tracks in the game, which get more difficult as you progress. The tracks are viewed from above and the graphics aren't too bad, apart from the cars themselves which are coloured rectangles with a white dot on the front to indicate which way you are facing. The one player mode against the computer is very tough. The computer opponent gets better and better as the tracks get harder and harder. Overall it's a decent race game that requires a lot of practice. The last level is incredibly difficult.

A Whittaker ditty and a short message. The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I played it on an emulator, with the speed turned down to 35%, and I saved my progress after every track.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Track twelve is very hard to beat. The computer driver takes the best racing line for all three laps. The only way to beat him is to keep close to him all the way, and then edge past him as he spins slightly on the final corner. You can only beat him by a fraction of a second. At the end of the race the lap times and points are shown, while a 'CONGRATULATIONS' message scrolls across the top of the screen. A message reading 'ALL COURSES COMPLETED' is displayed at the bottom. The game then loops back to level one when you press the fire button.

  • Neil: A huge relief to beat this one. I'm glad it didn't just loop back to level one. 2/10.
  • Vinny: I'm a real sucker for these simple and cheap Codemasters games. I can't work out what it is that gets me playing them for hours, but I just find them a lot of fun.

I truly am astonished to see that this game has an ending! All those years ago I was certain that no matter how far I played through the game it would just go round and round. How wrong I was. Okay - so it's not a stunning ending, but it certainly is an ending. Nice little Whittaker ditty specifically for the ending :) 3/10 from me.
  • Brendan Phoenix: Another rubbish ending from Codemasters, probably just a little bit less rubbish than most of the others, mainly thanks to the short little ditty. 2/10.
  • Andrew Fisher: Well, it's an ending of sorts, wasn't expecting one in that sort of game... It is just a simple congratulations message so can't score highly as an ending.
  • Andy Vaisey: A legend game! Who other than the Codies would publish a budget game where the cars are simple rectangles with dots on to show the front! The ending? Budget quality also I'm afraid... 1/10

FINAL SAY: It's a very simple ending. It's unlikely you'll see it without cheating.

G.E. RATING: 2.5 / 10
