Developed by Cosine at the 2009 Retro Reunited event, GR9 Strike Force is a cool shoot-’em-up for the Commodore 64. Your mission is to go into enemy territory and take out their land and air defences, paving the way for your ground forces to move in.

GR9 Strike Force was developed for the Retro Reunited event (12th to 13th September 2009) in Huddersfield, U.K. and stars the lucky winner of a door prize at the event, who was given a silly hat to wear before being photographed, converted and inserted into the game (and "loading" picture) live at the event by T.M.R! There are plans for a second release of this game at some point, so fingers crossed!

As the game currently stands, it would have made a great budget title back in the day. In fact, some of the graphics within the game remind me of the Codemasters title, SAS Combat Simulator. All in all a fun shoot-em-up to play and worthy of a blast or two.

Our hero is almost there...

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Gaz used a trained version of the game (what a CHEAT!) ;-)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once the final level is completed, the ending screen appears with our hero giving the 'thumbs up' signal and an ending message that reads: "GR9 STRIKE FOR OBJECTIVE ACHIEVED! REMARKABLE! YOU HAVE TWARTED THE INSURGENTS WITH YOUR BRAVERY AND SKILL. ALL WINGS RETURN TO BASE IMMEDIATELY. THE DAY HAS BEEN SAVED." This is accompanied by a specific game ending tune by Sean Connolly.

  • Vinny: Okay - so Jason didn't spend that much time on the game ending, but I do love the effects on the text and also the cool ending tune by Sean Connolly, which gives you the feeling of triumph and success. So much more could have gone into this ending, but I think that Jason gets bored pretty quick ;-)
  • Frank Gasking: GR9 Strike Force reminds me a lot of one of Jason's earlier games that never got released called Dionsys III - which was meant for Commodore Format. GR9 is the result of Jason coming a long way since then, with some great attack wave routines and well designed levels. I still can't wait for the final version of the game, which I think is getting there - and panel graphics have been updated etc. As for the ending - it's pretty basic, and Jason has gone more for others like Cyberwing - but then he's probably got something lined up for the final version.
  • Andy Vaisey: A cracking little game with an ending I expected to be honest. 3/10 sounds about right to me.
  • Andrew Fisher: It reminds me of Arcade Flight Simulator by Codemasters and Gladiator by Alternative - it's a fun game, and agree it would have done well as a budget title.

Nice to see it has an ending rather than looping, maybe if Jason goes back to it he could do something more impressive?
  • Gaz Spence: I didn't know about the Retro Reunited context to the game. I wouldn't mind being pixelated for a game so long as it wasn't strip poker... that would just scare off the customers. The game is actually pretty cool - a perfectly respectable SEU - and with a half decent ending to boot.

FINAL SAY: I think Jason got bored with this one - but I'm still his number one fan :-))))

G.E. RATING: 3 / 10
