Gaplus by Mastertronic is a Galaga clone. It's one
of the best conversions of the arcade classic on the
C64. It's a simple game where you have to blast every
attacking alien until the screen is clear in order to
progress to the next wave. The sprites are clear and
well drawn and the ship controls pretty well. There's
not a lot else to say apart from give this budget
shooter a go if you haven't played it and you're a

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
I played a cracked version with an infinite lives cheat.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?:
Once you have completed level 50, an ending message
appears, which reads: "WOW! MEGA! GAME COMPLETE!"
- Neil: Not a
great deal. A message appears which reads 'WOW! MEGA!
GAME COMPLETE!'. I don't know how this compares to the
arcade machine ending. 1/10 - A lot of zapping for a
crap ending. A neat budget game though.
- Vinny: I
haven't actually played this game yet... even though I
own two copies of it! And to be honest with you, I
didn't realise it was created by the great duo Ash n
Dave! So here's the thing... ZZAP!64 magazine scored
this 71%, yet Commodore User magazine thought it was
worthy of 97%. Sounds like a Marmite situation to me!
Unfortunately, the ending isn't anything to email home
about. It's flat and virtually non-existent :( 1/10 from
- Andy Vaisey:
A really good conversion let down slightly by the odd
glitch and slow moment. This is one of those rare
occasions where I disagreed with ZZAP. This game has got
to be worth mid-80's% in my humble opinion, particularly
taking into account the basement price of 199 pennies.
Of course, if you don't like this type of game, then
your mileage may vary. Me? Love Galaga and all
associated games and sequels so this is right up my
Huge slap in the face for Ash & Dave though for the
ending. Terrible. Shame.
- Andres Fisher:
I agree, I think it's a very good conversion that plays
well - for a budget price it was great value. There are
many good touches, for example the metallic colours of
the sprites. However the glitches and the substandard
ending do let it down.
- Gaz Spence:
A good conversion, certainly, and one that works well as
budget release. Just a shame the ending is something of
certainly didn't say 'WOW!" or "MEGA!"...
