> FROST BYTE by Mikro-Gen

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Monsters are taking over the planet of Cosmia and imprisoning the inhabitants, called the Kreezers. One Kreezer called Hickey has escaped, and it's down to this little fella to save the day. Yes, you've guessed it... it's Frost Byte by Micro-Gen ! Oh... you didn't guess... never mind. You take control of Hickey the slinky spring, who can leap, bend and fire bullets. You can collect various power-ups that can repel bad guys, speed yourself up and increase your jump power, whilst navigating through each level, avoiding or shooting the monsters to find one of your slinky pals. Once you have rescued them all and found the door to freedom, peace will be restored to Cosmia and the Kreezers can return to their peaceful lives... doing whatever a race of slinky folk do.

Signore Slinky has finally found his way out...

...and is reunited with his pals.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using an infinite lives and bullets cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: After working your way through the levels and rescuing all your pals, you find the final door to freedom. Once you walk through it you get do see a small animation of monsters bouncing around the screen. A few seconds later another screen appears which says 'WELL DONE. YOU ESCAPED'. It also shows how many of your friends you rescued and your final score. The game then restarts.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: I'd actually forgotten how this one ends, so it was nice to see it up on the site.

I used to play this on the Amstrad, which I suppose it kinda suited - with it's heavy colour palette and chunky graphics. I could never get anywhere in it though so I always wanted to know how it ended.

I'd also forgotten about the storyline - which is a bit crazy, and I can't remember writing the review so it was nice to read that again also.

Not a bad little game though, although like many others it could have done with being a little easier. 3/10.

  • Vinny: Hmmmm... like Neil said, it's an okay ending. Could have done with a lot more animation and a bit more of an epilogue - along with an ending tune. I am a Nick Jones fan, but it seems like he wasn't really into producing game ending - which is a shame because his games are cool.

  • Andrew Fisher: A very odd game, and not one of my favourite Mikro-Gen titles...

A shame about the ending, there's not a great deal to it for the effort you have to put in to finish it.

  • Brendan Phoenix: I remember seeing the ads for this in the computer press at the time and thinking how awful the cover art was.

Never played this game, but does seem to be one of those games I would like - didn't ZZAP used to call them Aardvark games??

Very disappointing ending, however without doubt, of it's type for this kind of game.

  • Andy Vaisey: Frost Byte feels like a very professional, well-coded game, but one suited to fans of the genre. And even they might get a little annoyed with the less than professional, lacklustre ending.

  • Gaz Spence: I actually bought the rerelease of this in early 90's. Not a bad little arcade adventure with some imaginative albeit Spectrumesque graphics. Gameplay's a little slow and rather tiresome after extended play. The ending is relegation material.

FINAL SAY: It's in no way great, but at least they made some effort.

G.E. RATING: 3 / 10
