I'm a big fan of Hannes Sommer's games such as Heavenbound, Lions of the Universe and Super Nibbly; and Fred's Back - the first game in a series of four - is another one of those quality titles.

Set in a colourful world of platforms and sprites, Fred's Back is a delightful romp that is easy on the eyes and ears. With it's cool handling and smooth graphics, this game is certainly a refreshing change from the platformers of old. It's just unfortunate that it was released at the end of the Commodore 64's commercial life. That aside, let's have a look at the ending...

Fred has reached the end of his quests.

HOLD ON A SEC! I've just realised that Fred has no clothes on!

Do you think he's a naturist?

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Gaz didn't let me know how he completed this, but I checked out the ending file and it looks like there is a cheat active (infinite lives and C= key to skip levels).

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once Fred reaches the end, the screen starts to scroll to the left, an ending tune kicks in, and the ending message reads: "FAB FRED! YOU SOLVED THIS ADVENTURE! ...HAVE A LOOK OUT FOR FRED'S BACK II COMING SOON! JESUS REIGNS!"

COMMENTS:

  • Vinny: I really like this game and I've played it many a time. Unfortunately, I never managed to complete it and did my utmost to avoid using any cheats. Looks like Gaz beat me to it :)

I'm a sad to see that the ending is a little flat. It could have done with some animation or some static and colourful pictures. I do like the tune, but there really isn't much else to this ending :(

  • Brendan Phoenix: Aaaah - the cardinal sin of plugging the next game in the ending!

  • Andrew Fisher: that's a shame, thought there might have been a good ending in there... I like the Fred games, and the puzzle spin-off Cosmox.

  • Kungfufurby: Not bad, but then again, there's not much. I wish there was a unique picture rather than the level scrolling backwards.

FINAL SAY: Great game - poor ending.

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
