Oh my god! Has anyone seen the overall game rating for Freak Factory that was awarded by ZZAP 64 magazine? Twenty-eight percent! What on earth were they thinking? I know the game doesn't look or sound too great, but it's still fun to play and worth a few more points.

Anyway, this ending was requested by Brendan Phoenix, who has been struggling for some time to complete it. I actually completed this game back in 1986 and remember that there is an ending; and so I was determined to do it again - if only for Brendan!

The final lift...

...and the final, upward jouney...

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I played with the code to this one and hacked the game to death. To see the ending, just follow these easy steps:

  • Start the game

  • Freeze the game using an Action Replay Cartridge or an emulator and enter the MONITOR function

  • Change the value at $BFF9 to $01

  • Then jump to location $1800: G 1800.

  • The ending will now automatically start!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Our hero is shown outside the factory with shades up and a smile on his face. The mad professor and his strange alien apprentices are now locked behind bars. The professor has a speech bubble with a scrolling message that reads: "CONGRATULATIONS. AT LAST I ADMIT DEFEAT. BUT YOU WILL NEVER KEEP ME BEHIND BARS. SOON I WILL BE FREE AND THEN..."

  • Vinny: I was actually pleased to see that this game had and ending, and it was nice to see it again. Like the game, it isn't going to win any awards, but it sits well within the game. It could have done with a different piece of music.
  • Andrew Fisher: Never saw or played this one back in the day, may have to check it out. Interesting little ending for a budget game though.
  • Gaz Spence: A quirky game with distinctive graphics - I think Zzap! missed the point with this game. The ending brings good closure to proceedings, rounding the story off nicely.
  • Brendan Phoenix: I bought this back in the day and enjoyed it at the time, fair to say it has not stood the test of time.

    The ending?

    And then..........?

    And then what???

    I need to know!!!!
  • Andy Vaisey: To be honest, ZZAP's overall score does seem a little low, but their harsh comments are about right. This is not a good game; there are a helluva lot better budget games out there. Having said that, it's got an ending so a slap on the back for that.

FINAL SAY: Give is a look and then put it to one side for another 20 odd years ;)

G.E. RATING: 5 / 10
