> FLINTSTONES: Yabba-dabba-doo by Quicksilva

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Here's a game that seems to have stirred up a bit of interest on the C64endings forum. It's Flintstones: Yabba-Dabba-Do. Vinny first mentioned the game when he tried to beat it himself, but gave up very quickly as he found the game to be too frustrating!

A letter to a Spectrum magazine has implied that the game is unbeatable, but is the C64 version the same? Fortunately, the C64 version is beatable.

The aim is to build a home and get Wilma to fall for you. Fred has to clear an area for his home, collect rocks to build the bottom layer, earn money to hire a dino to reach the roof of the house, build the roof of the house and then finally get Wilma to come and live with you. There are dinosaurs and other creatures wandering around, so you need to avoid them otherwise Fred will be sent spinning. You can also drive Fred's prehistoric car, which gets you around much quicker - but you need to find it first. Once you know what to do, the game can be beaten in no time at all. Overall it's a decent enough little action game to keep you entertained for a while. I'm glad I dug this one out and had another crack at it.

Fred takes Wilma from behind.

He then leads her to his lair.

Once through the door it's straight for the bedroom!

YABBA-DABBA-DOOOOOOO! The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite lives cheat. Since seeing the ending, I have built a crazy hack for Flintstones that has a whole host of new features, as well as revealing the ending. Check out the Crazy Hacks section of www.hackersoft.co.uk

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The last task in the game is to get Wilma back to your home. For a while, it seemed she would never follow me home. I tried another approach - I ran around as fast as I could, and grabbed Wilma as many times as I could, as quickly as I could. This seemed to work. Wilma then follows Fred back to his house, where they can be seen kissing through the window. Yabba-Dabba-Doooooooo !

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: I happy there's an ending as many thought that it wouldn't be possible to beat this one. The end itself is short, but it's not too bad. Worth a look if you have played this before and never seemed to get anywhere.

  • Vinny: God this game is too frustrating! I remember my cousin buying this game on the day of its release and it took him 5 minutes of frustration before he game the game to me! I spent an age trying to complete the damn thing, but to no avail. So, with the power of the internet, I put out some vibes on the C64endings forum and Neil took up the challenge. So what is there to say about the ending? It's cack and virtually non existent! Why couldn't they have created a fun, animated ending to go with the actual feel of the game and cartoon :( Yabba-dabba-POOOOO!

  • Brendan Phoenix: Yabba Dabba Doo Doo (steaming pile of doo doo). What a pity The Flintstones never had a good game on the C64, the later version by Grandslam (formally Quicksilva) was just as bad - maybe worse.

FINAL SAY: It's a short, little ending to a short game.

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
