• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Another beat-up complete. This time Final Fight. Not a bad game in the arcade and on other platforms. It's quite poor on the C64. Ugly sprites and bad animation all the way through, although the backdrops do improve slightly as you progress. The aim of the game is the usual scenario - get through the levels, find the evil bloke at the end, smash his face in and save the day..

Level 6 is finally complete!

Level 6 is finally complete!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using an infinite lives cheat, although this game didn't seem too difficult.. Just very repetitive and boring.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: You find the evil bad guy in his office at the top of a skyscraper. He has a gun, so you need to move about a lot to dodge his fire. After punching him for what seemed a lifetime, he was finally defeated and is sent smashing through the window behind him. You see him fall down the building to his death on the street below.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: Not a bad ending really. You get to see the villain die in spectacular style.

  • Vinny: OH MY GOOD GOD! What on EARTH were U.S. Gold thinking when they released this abysmal arcade conversion of Final Fight?! Seriously - could they not see that it was utter cack and that it needed at least a few more months work, a change of programmers, and a whole new outlook on the game itself! Fortunately, I never parted with any cash for this one ;) Thousands did!

Anyway - I think the ending is OK-ish. 4/10 from me.
  • Andy Vaisey: I loved this on the Amiga, but the C64 version sucks big time. I hoping no-one played it enough to even get as far as the end.
  • Gaz Spence: A case of USG making a quick buck, relying solely on the hype - just as with Streetfighter 2. The ending is as weak as the rest of the game but at least it's not a text only job. 3 out of 10 for me.
  • Brendan Phoenix: It's pretty faithful to the arcade, not half bad. Pity they did not include any spot fx or the ending epilogue.
  • Frank Gasking: Not a bad ending! ...I did however pick this one up at the time after loving the arcade machine. Not a brilliant conversion, with really funny collision detection and the ability to throw punches at one end of the screen, hurting enemies at the other side. I'm not sure why, but I liked it - probably because I was young at the time when it came out.

Interestingly it is by the same guy who did Double Dragon 2, which was far better in comparison. Although a lot of people slate this conversion, try Dick Tracy.

FINAL SAY: A better end than I expected.

G.E. RATING: 5 / 10
