> FIENDISH FREDDY'S BIG TOP 'O FUN by Mindscape

• Completed & Reviewed by Brendan Phoenix
Opening paragraph by Vinny Mainolfi

Now here's a very strange game that actually turned out to be a corker :) Fiendish Freddy's Big Top 'o Fun is full of great graphics and game play that earned it many accolades within the gaming industry and community. It's a tough game to play and one that I never managed to complete, which is why I was delighted to see that team member, Brendan Phoenix, had managed to beat the game once and for all.

Brendan was kind enough to send in both the unsuccessful and successful endings, and so we start with the unsuccessful version...

Now you see it...

...and now you don't!

Hmmm... what's this?

Flippin' ek!

The End.

And now for the successful ending...

The panel is out...

HUH?

OMG!

"Weeeeeeee..."

"SHEE-YIT!"

"RUN FOR IT!"

Heh-heh - this really is a comedy moment.

Very slapstick.

Poor guy :/

Nearly there...

...The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: This was a bit difficult as no cheats or trainers - luckily the manual was on Lemon Amiga. The juggling section was by far and away the hardest.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: I have included the bad ending when you do not collect the $10k - shows the big top being demolished, replaced by a high rise called Freddy Towers.

The proper ending is very good (I have saved it from the judges award) the head line 'It aint over till the fat lady sings' appears. We are then shown all the characters in the game, the diver, ringmaster, etc who all jump on a see saw, laughing a giant fat woman into the air. The bad guy (Freddy) is seen running for his life - however the fat woman lands on top of him! The end pic then shows the circus in all it's glory - saved!

COMMENTS:

  • Brendan: I had never played this on the C64 - although I had played it on the Amiga - the graphics are great for the C64 and it's good to see an ending which has graphics just as good as what has come before in the game - the ending is most fitting in a cartoon style. Score wise, it's a toughie - I really think, graphic wise, this is one of the best animated endings I have seen on the C64, great big bold, colourful sprites - and a fitting ending to the game. I would give it an 8/10.

  • Vinny : Wow! What a cool ending :) I was astonished to see how much effort was put into this. Okay, so it's not polished, which is why it didn't get a 10/10 rating, but it's still very impressive and worth seeing.

  • Brendan (additional): Makes a nice change that the end sequence graphics are just as good as what we saw before in the game. How many times do we play a great game with brilliant sonics and visuals only to get a cack ending? Nice that the effort was put in and easily the best ending we have seen on the site for a while. Pretty playable game as well, can imagine it being better in 2 player mode though and it stands up really well to the Amiga version.

  • Matt Rogers: I'm struggling to see how this isn't a gold medal! The only downer is that it's a multi-load. Great stuff.

  • Andrew Fisher: This was a really impressive conversion, and it plays brilliantly from cartridge (which of course eliminates the multiload hassle). Although a little tricky, there's some brilliant gameplay in there and the cartoon graphics (particularly the judging panel) are superb. The endings are very good too.

  • Kungfufurby: Hey, that's some good comedy with the good ending! Reminds me of the ending to Road Runner on the SNES... because the fat lady lands on Wile E. Coyote, the bad guy. Animation for when the fat lady is launched is a bit "flickery", but I figured it might be like that. Like that last screen, too! ^_^ I presume with the unsuccessful ending that's Freddy in the spotlight after Freddy's Towers has been built?

  • Andy Vaisey: Phew, I was beginning to think there were no good endings left out there! While the graphics aren't superb, they convey the comedy and humour suitably - very well thought out and well executed. A pleasing ending to a fun game. 8/10.

  • Anthony Burns: It took my sister and I many months of practice and co-operating on our best events (in my case, diving, juggling, and cannonball, while she took trapeze, knife throw, and tightrope) in order to scrape the 10000pts mark and see the ending. I think we were both expecting an anticlimax after all of that effort - especially after having put similar effort into completing the Dizzy series (which tended to have very poor end screens) - but how wrong we were ...

How nice when an ending, just occasionally, would justify the work involved in trying to win a game fairly. For most end sequences of this calibre (Creatures, Turrican, etc) I would have to cheat like silly to get a sight of them. ;)

FINAL SAY: Just missed a GOLD MEDAL - but still a superb ending :)

G.E. RATING: 9 / 10
