> ENDURO RACER by Activision

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Enduro Racer by Activision is an awful conversion of the popular arcade game. Activision really let themselves down with this one, which is why it scored very low in the C64 magazines, and rightly so. It’s terrible. I painfully made my way through the few courses to see if there was an ending of any kind....

The final stage is complete.

Time for the scores.

GOAL! hold on a sec... this isn't a football match!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite time cheat. It had to be done.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Your lap times are calculated and you get a ‘GOAL IN’ message. You get to post your name on the high score table (I normally put some swear words). The game then ends and returns you back to the main menu.

  • Neil: I was hoping to see the bloke get off his bike and wave or something, but I was left disappointed. 1/10.
  • Vinny: Activision is one of those software houses we all love. It's not surprising either with such wonderful games under their belt such as: Ghostbusters, Little Computer People, Ballblazer, The Eidolon, Pitfall 1 & 2, Ninja Spirit... to name but a few. So why is it that they let this sorry excuse of an arcade conversion through the net! It really is a bad piece of coding and in my eyes it shouldn't have been released - I think ZZAP! 64 magazine felt the same way when they only scored it 16%. Pity it isn't like the Master System version :(

As for the ending... is THAT it! Actually - let's be honest here... were we really expecting anything from this below average game? I thought not. 0.5/10 from me.
  • Andrew Fisher: 16% was harsh but it is a poor conversion - it never feels like you are moving at great speeds, and the jumps are so awkward.

I doubt the arcade game has much more of an ending, but it would have been nice to see a podium or trophy or something as reward for persistence.
  • Andy Vaisey: Another game that I never bothered with because of the poor ZZAP! review. Have played it since in an emulator and can see where they were coming from.

The ending is poor, but is to be expected from an arcade conversion I suppose.
  • Brendan Phoenix: I always remember looking at the graphics on the ZX version and thinking 'if only!'

Crap games can have great endings though - look at another arcade conversion racer - Wec Le Mans. However, in this instance we have crap game = crap ending.
  • Gaz Spence: I liked the game on the Master System and there should have been no reason why the C64 couldn't have handled a much better conversion. The ending is seriously pants - and pants with skidmarks at that.

FINAL SAY: Crap. With a capital C.

G.E. RATING: 1 / 10
