> Drelbs by Synapse Software

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Drelbs is a crazy, psychedelic puzzle game by Synapse Software. Synapse seemed to produce some really bizarre games and this one is right up there with the strangest. I remember a friend owning this game years ago, but I never got around to borrowing it off him to play as it didn't look that interesting. It is actually a nice little puzzle game - even if it is a bit crazy, so I will try and describe it as best I can...

You control some sort of orb on legs around a maze of rotating walls. You must avoid the enemies patrolling this maze whilst turning the walls to form rectangles. These then turn into solid blocks, which flash various colours. Once you have done this a few times, you will hopefully find a rectangle with some sort of monkey-like face on it - which you can enter. This drops you into a small sub-game where you must collect all the items to progress to the next maze, again avoiding the creatures that chase you around. I told you it was nuts ! After eight levels the game is beaten. I quite enjoyed this game - it is great fun. You must try this out if you like fast action games.

It's a very original and imaginative title.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using an infinite lives cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once you have beaten the eighth level a small end sequence begins. The odd looking face that you find on the blocks (the monkey-like woman or whatever it is supposed to be) is shown in the centre of the screen, while hearts pop up all over the place to fill it completely. The words 'YAY CUTIE' are shown on the top corner. The game then restarts.

  • Neil: It's all a bit bonkers, but I like that kinda thing. Answers on a postcard to: What the hell is Drelbs all about, PO BOX 55, Noddyland. 4/10.
  • Vinny: Never played this game before... even though it's sitting in one of my game cupboards somewhere.

As for the ending... that is VERY odd indeed! 4/10 from me.
  • Andy Vaisey: Not a great ending, but I'll go with your rating just for the strangeness of it all - I'd be scared to give it lower it case it came to get me...
  • Andrew Fisher: When I first played this, I was like - what is going on?
But after a few games I really got into it, and enjoy playing it.

As for the ending, it works well with the rest of the game.
  • Gaz Spence: Very psychedelic in appearance and to me screams of a programmer that maybe experimented with mind altering substances. I can't get the ending but at least a little effort has been made. Now I wonder what it would be like playing it on shrooms... On second thoughts perhaps not.

FINAL SAY: Very odd indeed.

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
