> DRAGON'S LAIR 2: Escape from Singe's Castle by Software Projects

• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Dragon’s Lair II was one of the landmark C64 games. It had it all – Amazing graphics, sound and gameplay (a little frustrating at times on some levels). As a kid I could get close to the end, but never got to the final screen.

Oooo... that looks tricky!

Flap your arms hard enough and you may be able to fly to safety.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Using a cracked version that allowed me to skip to the last level. The final level was quite simple. Run across the bridge and avoid the mud men – then finally leap across the chasm.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Our hero Dirk flaps his arms about and your final score is displayed on the screen. A cloud appears and lifts our hero up out of the screen to safety.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: Not very good. The game would have taken a lot of skill and time to complete. Shame the ending didn’t live up to what was a superb C64 game. 3/10.

  • Vinny: I've never been a fan of this game - even though a lot of people rave about it... the game play just doesn't excite me...

And as for the ending... I don't get it! What on EARTH is supposed to be happening! 2/10 from me.
  • Matt Rogers: Hey, hey...here's a game I played to death - with infinite lives pokes, of course! Playing it these days I find the first level extremely stressful - especially when you have to pick between 3 holes.

The end is nonsense - the death sequence on that level (full screen mud men) tops it by miles.
  • Andy Vaisey: I was always torn by these Dragon's Lair games. On one hand, considering their arcade origins, the conversions to the C64 are quite good with some decent sound and graphics. They do present some challenge and good fun initially. However, the over reliance on memory and twitch reactions does kind of kill the game play for me in the end. And the ending is disappointing in a 'WTF?' kind of way.
  • Brendan Phoenix: The 2nd is a pretty cool game - even know that boat section is sooooo frustrating! I enjoyed this a hell of a lot more than the 1st. It still looks good too.

The ending however is a massive disappointment.
  • Andrew Fisher: It was an interesting approach from Software a Projects.

The C64 games are based on the Coleco Vision version of Dragon's Lair.

Escape From Singe's Castle is probably most memorable for some excellent Rob Hubbard music.
Some of the sections with large sprites or attempting 3D are good too.

    But... That ending is poor.
  • Gaz Spence: Essentially glorified reaction tests, the games haven't aged too well although the animated sequences were somewhat innovative at the time. I guess the c64 conversions were just about as good as could be expected but the ending on show is really quite poor.

FINAL SAY: Shame. The game is let down by its poor ending.

G.E. RATING: 2.5 / 10
