> DICK TRACY by Titus Software

• Completed & Reviewed by Brendan Phoenix

Back in the eighties, ITV repeated old Dick Tracy cartoons during school holidays - along with Batfink and Roger Ramjet. Unfortunately I wasn't too impressed with the cartoon, though the art always intrigued me because it was very clean and precise - a brand in its own right.

Skip forward a few years and the cartoon has been transferred to the medium of films and also computer games, but unfortunately it remained unimpressive and failed to excite the computer game press, only scoring 11% with ZZAP! 64 and Commodore Format, and 42% with Your Commodore magazine. The also movie failed to attract a positive reaction and has become one of life's Rotten Tomatoes!

I'm guessing the game ending isn't going to change anyone's opinion of the Dick Tracy brand...

The cops have arrived...

...and take Big Boy Caprice...

The headlines.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: Brendan is a bit of a gangster and cheated his way to the end!

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The ending starts with an animation of two policemen taking away Big Boy Caprice. We then see a newspaper cover of Caprice, and then a scenic picture. This is accompanied by an ending tune.

  • Brendan: Hmmm - I don't know what is going on!!! The end game tune is ok - we have a short animation which looks like 2 cops arresting someone (the sprites are terrible) a newspaper headline and a shot of the city at night. Nothing else - the tune is ok though! 4/10.
  • Vinny: I'm definitely not a fan of this game.

Unfortunately the ending doesn't really bring anything to the plate and leaves me wondering what I'm missing. It feels a little rushed and lacks any soul. 5/10 from me too.
  • Gaz Spence: A game that is often cited as one of the c64s worst. I know this is a bit of a generalisation, but with the French market's love affair with the Amstrad CPC, the C64 conversions seemed not to be a priority and in many respects token gestures. At least the ending to Dick has some sort of narrative but it doesn't redeem the irredeemably bad game.
  • Andy Vaisey: I seem to have a complete aversion to anything Dick Tracy, so this has a black mark against it before I even start. Oh, and that black gets longer because this game is trash. And I mean trash with a capital TRASH. Then for some reason, this trash game has a reasonable ending in my books. Not great, but adequate. How does that work?

FINAL SAY: The guy is a Dick, Tracy!
