I remember this game well as I owned it as a kid and thought the name was a bit silly. I also distinctly remember not being able to get anywhere in the game as it was incredibly difficult...

Demons of Topaz is a simple side scrolling platform game with basic graphics and sound, but it's far from simple to play. Death comes regularly in the form of alien enemies, deadly background items and falling off platforms (from heights that you should really survive). This is one of those budget games that could well have been a classic had it not been for it's difficulty and level design.

The aim of the game is to find seven fuel crystals and return them to the spaceship in order to escape the alien planet. I can't imagine how anyone could do this without cheats!

The final fuel crystal is collected.

The aliens have dissapeared!

Our hero's ship is taking off...

...and on its way home...

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I poked about in the code to find the address that held the value that indicated Ozzy carried a fuel crystal. It was then a case of returning it to the ship, poking the code again and repeating it six more times.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once Ozzy has returned the final crystal, the engines fire up on the bottom of the spaceship. It rises up off the screen and the game is beaten.

  • Neil: Yes there's some animation, but there's no explanation or anything to get excited about. I'm just glad this difficult game has finally been conquered. 2/10.
  • Vinny: Silly isn't it... after 30 years of owning and playing this game, I finally notice that it's actually called Ozzy Versus The Universe - Part 1: Demons of Topaz! I always thought it was just 'Demons of Topaz'! How on EARTH did I miss the rest of the name; I mean - it's written clearly on the loading and title screen! Ah! I just worked it out... the tape inlay just says 'DEMONS OF TOPAZ' with no mention of Ozzy :-) Sorted.

Anyway - not much to the ending apart from the ship taking off. The annoying thing is, it just comes back down again to land! 2/10 from me too.
  • Andy Vaisey: Well, a bit of animation in an old game. Nice touch. 2/10 sounds about right.
  • Andrew Fisher: One of the first games I ever played on my C64, when I borrowed the tape from a friend. I'll always remember the music, even if it's not particularly good - and the game play was so tough! I do remember the "part 1" business, but can't recall any follow-up.

As for the ending - good for a budget game from that year, but still very simplistic.

FINAL SAY: Not too bad. I expected a simple 'Well done' from this budget game.

G.E. RATING: 2 / 10
