Clean Up Service by Players software is the follow up to Clean Up Time. It's a single screen platform game for one or two players. You play the parts of cleaners Boban and Otto, whose task is to clear each screen of rubbish. You do this by getting a broom from the equipment box and sweeping near the littered area. You can also use the broom as a weapon to whack the attacking enemies. The enemies appear from bins and they drop litter as they wander around the playing area, so you need to grab a bin lid from the equipment box and put it on top of the bins to stop the enemies appearing. This will allow you to clean the area without interruption. The levels get harder as you progress, so you really need to play this with two players if you are to complete it as the action gets pretty frantic. The graphics are nice and colourful and it plays smoothly.

I had this game as a kid, but it was too hard for me to beat back then. It's a decent budget game that is worth checking out. Here's the ending...

The final level is complete!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite lives cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: The final level is based in a spooky castle filled with ghosts. If you beat it, the two cleaners exit the level up through the top of the screen by holding onto balloons. The final screen shows the two cleaners with their boss and a few other characters gathered together in front of various furniture. A message at the top of the screen reads: "YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE LAST LEVEL. THE MILKSHAKES ARE ON THE HOUSE. CONGRATULATIONS!!!"

  • Neil: The end is similar to the cut scenes between levels. It needed some animation and a bit more going on. It's an ending though, so I can't complain too much.
  • Vinny: I'm a big fan of those early Karl Hornell games and so this one's right up my street. I was quite surprised to see that it does have an ending - be it very small - but an ending it is. As Neil said, it could have done with some animation and also an ending tune.
  • Karl Hörnell (programmer of this game!): Clean Up Service is probably my favourite as well. I went really wild with some of the game levels, especially the the one with the hamburgers. It's not without flaws, of course. Most notably, it lacks a proper control panel. By the time it was released, all self-respecting C64 games had one, and my contact at Interceptor Software (the company behind the Players label) made a scathing remark about that. Afterwards I thought, "So they want a control panel, do they? Well, my next game is going to have the most kick-ass, over-designed control panel anyone has ever seen!" And that game was Fungus II, which was unfortunately never officially released.

FINAL SAY: A milkshake for all that work? I want more than that mate!
