CAVERNS OF ERIBAN

• Completed
& Reviewed by Vinny Mainolfi
Back in 1985 I owned an original copy of this game,
but unfortunately I found it far too hard to play. Maybe
that's why ZZAP64 magazine only scored it 25%! It's
actually a good game, and only really comes into its own
when you play it using infinite ships, supplies, and
fuel. It still took me 25 minutes to complete and was
still hard to play, but it was a little more satisfying
than 25%!
Anyway, here's the
ending...

The final one to shut
down.

"Is that it?"

"Ah - there's more"

The End.
HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?:
I used a trainer version that game me tones of great
cheats. It was still a challenge to complete and took me
around 25 minutes. At one point I got totally lost and
couldn't find the last tower! I also used save states to
save my progress. By the way, I have save the ending at
the point where you just need to land the ship.
SO WHAT HAPPENS?:
Once you have shut down the final tower, the screen goes
blank and the words 'GAME OVER' appear. You then
get a message that reads: "WELL DONE...YOUR TASK IS
COMPLETE. ENTER YOUR NAME:".
COMMENTS:
- Vinny: I'll be
honest here and say that I was expecting nothing to
happen at the end of this game, and that's virtually
what you get. It's a good game and worthy of a much
better ending - even an epilogue would have helped.
- Brendan Phoenix:
There is something about these cheapo titles from
this period, the artwork, the titles, they all looked
great - something mysterious about them. Am i waffling?
The later cheapo titles never did it for me was defo the
84-88 period, maybe not even that late. Think before we
got swamped with full price titles being re-released on
the budget labels. Anyway, the end - cack. 0.5/10.
- Andy Vaisey:
Christ, you have to be some kind of hard as nails games
player to get anywhere in this... I remember playing
this somewhere (a friends house?), but I never owned it
and never saw the ZZAP! review. Out of sheer interest, I
just read the ZZAP! review online and the best part is
the advert for the classic game Mercenary Escape from
Targ - The Second City that, due to the page layout,
cuts into the review. Anyway, back to Caverns of Eriban
- in my (isolated here it seems) opinion, a rubbish game
with equally awful ending.
- Kungfufurby: I
was quite surprised that they put in a game over
screen... and then a message after it. Still, it fails.
Miserably.
- Andrew Fisher:
Not played this one, don't know if I'll bother...
FINAL SAY: Another ending to steer clear of :(
