I'm a big fan of the Hi-Tec games and have quite a few original games in my tape collection, but for some strange reason, this game isn't in my collection. It should be because it's my kind of cheapie shoot-em up. Maybe I need to hunt it down in eBay.

Anyway - ZZAP!64 magazine had their doubts about this vertically scrolling shoot-em up and only scored it 42%! I feel it's worth much more than that. Okay - so it has a few annoying features, but I think that overall it's quite a cool game with some nice sound, graphics and game play. Let's not forget that it was only £3.99! It definitely deserves more than 42%...

A superb futuristic city scape.

Our ship comes in to land...

...and a 'congratulations' is in order.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I think Brendan, like me, used a cracked version of the game that allowed you to jump straight to the end sequence. Quality :)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Once the final level is complete, you are whisked off to a view of the city with a ship flying past. Your ship then comes into view and the ending message reads: "CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE LANDED THE BLACK HORNET SAFELY. THE PLANET IS SAVED!

  • Vinny: WOW! I'm impressed with this ending. Okay - so it's lacking in the sonix department and it could do with a longer epilogue and some more animation/graphics, but it's still cool for a cheapie. 5/10 from me.

  • Brendan Phoenix: Black Hornet is ok, animated and a short message but no tune which is a big let down - 3/10.

  • Gaz Spence: The ending's pretty slick for budgie game, I have to say. A pleasant surprise. 5/10 for me.
  • Andrew Fisher: I remember playing a version with infinite lives for a few minutes and getting really bored with it - it didn't seem to have much depth. But that is an excellent ending sequence for a budget game.
  • Andy Vaisey: At least they bothered with an ending - a pretty decent ending to a pretty average game.

FINAL SAY: Definitely lacking in the sound department :-(

G.E. RATING: 5 / 10
